I happen to be someone who constantly installs and re-installs WordPress for this blog, to test plugins, and for clients. I found that the critically acclaimed “Famous 5-Minute Install” took just a bit too long for me. The process eats up quite a bit of time, especially if find yourself installing WordPress constantly. So to speed things up, I wrote a quick shell script that does just about all the work in just a few commands.

Things you’ll need:

SSH Server Access

SSH Client

If you need an SSH Client, on Windows machines I recommend PuTTY. It’s less than 1MB and doesn’t even need to be installed. If you are on Linux or Macintosh, you are fortunate enough to have a Terminal built right in. Now connect to your web server, login, and watch the video for the rest!

The Code From Video:

wget http://skattertech.com/media/2009/09/wpinstall.sh
chmod 700 wpinstall.sh
./wpinstall.sh

Notice: The script location has been changed, use the one mentioned above. Not the one in the video.

That’s just about it. WordPress should have been installed into the directory you executed the command in. Then just follow the instructions WordPress provides in the web interface to configure your database’s username and password. Finally you should be prompted to pick a name for your Blog!

Links: WordPress.org | Official Install Steps
Video: Watch on Vimeo

Notice: Be warned, if you end up accidentally making an error which causes you to loose or damage the data on your server, we will not be held responsible. Use the steps provided here at your own risk. This was created for convince, but misuse can potentially cause issues. If you don’t know how to deal with SSH, we recommend using official instructions to be safe.

WordPress 2.6 was just released a couple of hours ago and it packed with plenty of new features. I had a chance to upgrade Skatter Tech, previously running version 2.5.1, and the entire process went through quite smoothly without any issues. I have included the official video demonstration of WordPress 2.6 above, however I will also go over some of the notable features below.

Post Revisions
This implementation will be a savior to authors who write and edit articles in the WordPress editor. Each time a post is modified a revision is saved. (Like Wikipedia.) Authors can switch back to previous editions or compare two different revisions. This is probably the next best addition to the editor since auto save. The editor also received a few other new goodies including a Word Counter and a improved uploader.

Press This! Bookmarklet
For those who blog content as they browse the web, this is going to be very handy. The new Press This! bookmarklet acts quite like Tumblr. When you launch the bookmarklet, a popup window appears offering options to blog the page you are currently viewing and choose whether it should be considered a Text, Photo, Quote, or Video post. Although I may not use this to blog right away, it is quite neat to be able to save drafts with some info so I can come back to it later.

SSL-Encrypted Admin Panel
Security is a big issue for those who have large blogs. Previously with no SSL support, hackers monitoring a network could theoretically capture passwords and data being published to your blog. There have been a couple of WP Plugins to address this issue, however I personally never found any to function as required. Authors now can login using the HTTPS protocol to encrypt the data being related between their machine and their server for protection. And it’s been working great, for me, so far!

Other Stuff
There are a couple other notable features added, one of which is the Gears add-on. The add-on has to be installed to your computer’s browser and intelligently caches Javascript and CSS files to your machine to allow a much faster and smoother work flow. WordPress now also allows bloggers who are re-designing their themes to now preview it before making it visible to their readers. This would have been quite handy when I was in the process of designing my theme!

There are plenty of other things that have been included in the update and if you wish to find out more about them, visit Word Press 2.6 Announcement Post. If you are using WordPress I personally recommend you upgrade to 2.6. There are many new features you will truly appreciate!

Since we switched over to the WordPress platform about a year and half ago, we’ve have continuously been hit by large numbers of spammers. Luckily with some tweaks, pieces of code, a few services, and some manual labor we’ve been able to catch 100% spam comments on our site. If you were wondering what was our number one tool, one word, Akismet. This innovative spam catching tool, alone, has caught over 100,000 spam comments for Skatter Tech this year. Akismet works by checking checking the data that is posted onto our server with a huge database of items known to be spam. Since the spam database learns by users moderating their own comments, it automatically adapts to new types of spam. According to their website, Akismet has been able to catch 93% of all the spam that would hit a website.

Although this only caught about 60% of the total amount of spam, it took another 3-4 tools, including Bad Behavior, to block another 30%. We still end up having to manually catch and throw out about 10% of what gets onto our sites. We could always implement a captcha system or require registration, however that would only be annoying and would deter everyone from participating in discussions. This tool has been primarily created for WordPress, however it is also compatible with plenty of other systems including Movable Type, Drupal, phpBB, Expression Engine, Joomla and more! We highly recommend giving Akismet a shot if you already haven’t heard about it and are having problems fighting spam.

P.S. We’ll be posting a WordPress tutorial on combating spam very soon!

For those WordPress users that already do not know, Microsoft’s new Word 2007 now supports publishing posts to blogs powered by services such as WordPress, TypePad, Blogger, and Live Spaces. It doesn’t exactly support every feature most blogging admin panels include, but is still a decent editor. I recommend using it to write out the text, spell check, and save the post as a draft. Then, once complete, login to your admin panel to format everything and finally publish.

If own Word 2007 and don’t plan to use it to blog, I recommend trying it since it’s extremely easy to setup. Just follow this tutorial and you should be able to start publishing articles within 2-3 minutes.

(Note: Tutorial is specific to WordPress. Click on thumbnails for larger pics)

MS Word 2007 Setup Procedure:
1) Open a Microsoft Word Document

2) Hit the new Office Button Then select Publish -> Blog
3) If prompted to register, select “Register Now”

4) Choose WordPress from the dropdown and hit “Next”

5) Enter your exact WP blog URL followed by “/xmlrpc.php”
6) Then enter your WP username and password and press OK

Once complete, you should receive a “Account registration successful.” in a few seconds. You may now enter a Post Title, Insert Categories you have previously created and write your article. When ready you may either directly publish it or save it as a draft for later from the dropdown. Word 07 also allows editing recent documents you have published by using the “Open Existing” button. If you need any help or having problems, you are welcome to ask questions in the comments.

Only about two weeks after the launch of WordPress 2.0.6 and 2.0.7, the WordPress crew finally pushed v2.1 (aka “Ella”) out of beta. WP2.1, rather than a patch, is a major upgrade from the 2.x series. The blogging engine, which Skatter Tech is currently running, now has a more powerful back-end for administrators to manage content. Although many plugins no longer work for 2.1, we recommend updating since it also includes over 550 bug fixes. The following is some of the major changes implemented.

WordPress v2.1 Features:

Ajax AutoSave Posts – prevents loosing posts

Tabbed Editor – WYSIWYG and Raw Code

Ajax-based Spell Checker for composer

XML Import/Export – transfer data between blogs

Search Engine – custom indexing privacy settings

Front Page – set any page as the main page

Blogroll – many improvements and changes

Login – redesigned screen from Shuttle

Ajax Admin Panel – helps speed up tasks

Comment Feeds – includes all rather than last 10

Uploads – management for uploaded data

Other: Cron support, new APIs, and more

We are pleased with the overall improvments the update brings. Managment and content seems to be flowing much faster than ever before. As we mentioned we are having diffucluties with some plugins, but most of the major ones either already have been updated or work.

A new version of WordPress (2.0.6), which fixes a major security flaw is now available. Although the update only fixes other minor issues, it is recommend you upgrade due to the security issue. For all WordPress users out there, version 2.0.6 which fixes a security flaw is now available. We upgraded Skatter Tech earlier today and had no issues what so ever.

WordPress 2.0.6 Features:

The aforementioned security fixes.

HTML quicktags now work in Safari browsers.

Comments filtered to prevent messing up layout.

Compatibility with PHP/FastCGI setups.

According the announcement, this is (or should be) the last minor upgrade before v2.1. The next major upgrade will bring plenty of new features rather than fixes to the engine. A beta of v2.1 is already now available for those who join the “beta group” on WordPress.org.

Note: There are apparently a few bugs which causes feed readers such as FeedBurner to have difficulty fetching feeds from this version. Despite this bug, is it is recommended you upgrade because of the security holes being patched. (A new v2.0.7 might be pushed out soon.)

We recently had some requests to offer a wider version of our theme. Our server statistics showed that over 80% of our readers had screen resolutions greater than 1000 pixels wide. Therefore we decided to integrate a second CSS to our site’s theme and a bit of java to allow switching back and forth instantly. With a click of the “Toggle CSS” button, Skatter Tech’s theme should instantly expand from its original 800 pixel wide format into one 1000 pixels wide. We will also leave a tiny cookie in your browser which will save your preference for future visits.

P.S. We have tested this in MSIE 6.0 and Firefox 1.5+, let us know if you were able to get this to work in your browser or if you experienced any problems. Please reply in the comments.

The had pulled the site from their hosting server and decided to hold it until we upgraded our hosting plan. Anyways we decided to leave and after going through another hosting provide Yahoo, where we once again ran into some technical issues, we wound up with Media Temple. Media Temple seems to be working out for the time being. With this being said, Skatter Tech has been restored and we’ll be getting back on track right away. Definitely expect more posts, new authors, and better content soon!

On May 23, 2006, Webshots announced a new easy to use photo hosting service called All You Can Upload. Webshots, which is a part of CNET, is already a major photo sharing service, but with their new service photo sharing/hosting will be faster than ever. All You Can Upload (AYCU) is quite different than most free image sharing services such as imageshack for a few reasons: AYCU offers unlimited file sizes, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited number of files, no advertisements, and no registration required. I definitely would recommend this service over other ones for people looking for free image hosting space. This is an excellent tool to use with sites such as MySpace, eBay, Xanga, Blogger and Typepad.

“Webshots understands the variable needs of photo uploaders and is providing AllYouCanUpload.com as an answer to those seeking a tool for fast, easy, free uploads,” – James Park, Webshots Director

After testing this service I feel that the UI is very clean and easy to use and has no obtrusive ads. The only issue I could think find is that if a user uploads a photo and forgets the URL, he or she will have to either remember it or re-upload the file since AYCU doesn’t require users to register in any method. Other than that All You Can Upload seems to be good since it supports the major image formats.
