It’s finally here. After an announcement earlier this year, Google finally revealed their new open-source project named Chromium OS. As the name implies, it’s closely associated with the fairly new and increasingly popular Google Chrome browser. Although it won’t be available to users for another year, they plan to work with the open source community and developers to make improvements before an official launch. Just about every line of code is available to anyone who wishes to contribute to the project. Google hopes to begin to make final implementations to the code through out the next year.

For the most part, it’s unlike any other operating system. It focuses at making the web a better experience rather than on local desktop applications. Chromium tries to utilize Google’s vastly growing “cloud computer” network. Instead of installing applications, most will run right out of a browser, while still offering a similar experience. The entire OS caters to the idea of a light weight operating system. Most data will be stored on Google’s network instead of your computer’s hard drive. Google also boasts safer working environment since each application would be contained within a “sandbox,” preventing access to other bits of data on your machine. It supposedly can fix itself with a simple reboot if the base code becomes damaged. Reboots don’t take long either, Chromium takes just a few seconds to start up.

With that kept in mind, the OS will initially be designed for low-powered Netbooks. It won’t be able to replace a full Windows, Macintosh, or Linux system anytime soon, but it would be a great complement.

The Chocolate 3 is the third generation model, not including the spin-offs, of the “LG Chocolate” series. What makes this phone stand out from rest is the inclusion of the Rhapsody Subscription Service through the V Cast Music. This is wonderful for music fanatics since they will now have unlimited wireless access to over 5 million songs high quality full length songs available in the Rhapsody library. And just like the LG Muziq, the Chocolate 3 sports a FM-transmitter to broadcast the music on your phone to your car’s stereo. In addition with a multitasking-supported back end, you’ll never have to stop listening to music when you wish to read/send messages, browse your contacts/web, or do most other tasks. Just like most phones on the market, excluding the iPhone, the Chocolate 3 doesn’t have any built in flash-memory storage, however it supports the use of up to 8GB microSD cards.

“We are proud of the success and popularity of the Chocolate series of handsets, and are excited about the upgrades made with this new edition,” said Mr. Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG Mobile Phones. “The LG Chocolate 3 helps Verizon Wireless customers minimize the number of electronic devices they need to carry at one time, allowing for a large capacity of music storage and connection to a car stereo without any wires.”

Asides from the music components, the LG VX-8560 (“the real name”) also remains quite a robust phone. It sports Bluetooth v2.1, V Cast Navigator, 2.0 mega-pixel camera/camcorder, Mobile Web/Email/IM, Speakerphone, Voice Commands, and many more features. Although battery life with playback hasn’t yet been officially benchmarked, they do advertise 4.5 hours of talk time. The LG Chocolate 3 is now available for purchase on VerizonWireless.com and in Verizon Wireless Stores. The phone will cost new customers $129.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and require a new two-year contract.

P.S. – (07/15/08) – We just got a hold of the Chocolate 3, so expect an in-depth review soon! And a special thanks to the Verizon Wireless PR folks who have been extremely helpful!

We were tired of seeing “what’s my ip?” websites which were slow and messy to use so we launched our own service! All you really need is your IP address, so that’s exactly what we’re going to provide you. Nothing else. The page is just under a kilobyte and will load as fast as it possibly could. Skatter Tech IP will provide two pieces of data at this time: your ip address and your domain host. At this point this is all we plan to offer, but we plan to expand our tools in the future. And just like the rest of Skatter Tech, any tracked data is completely kept completely private. We will ONLY use it for statistical purposes. Any specific user information will be not be available for ANYONE to view. Anyways, to find out what your IP address is, just visit http://ip.skattertech.com. Even hit
CTRL+D
add it to your bookmarks!

If you have any suggestions or ideas to implement into onto this site, just leave us a comment!

Just about every new laptop purchased today is bundled with a built-in web cam. It’s a great accessory for video conferencing, but there are also plenty of other useful things to do with them. This tutorial will demonstrate how to turn just about any web camera into a security camera which will capture any movement it sees using motion technology. No extra components or tools required!

What’s Needed:

Windows XP or Vista Computer

A USB or built-in Camera

Java Runtime Environment 6 +

Windows Media Player 9 +

Quick Install Process:
1) Download yawcam.zip and unzip it
2) Click on
yawcam.exe
and install it
3) Start Menu -> Start up Yawcam

Note: If you have a USB camera, plug it in before starting up yawcam. If yawcam says “No Device Selected”, go to Settings -> Device -> Change to -> [select your camera]. If you are able to view your camera in the Yawcam Preview window, proceed to the next step.

Setup Motion Detection:
1) Go to Window -> Motion Detection (a new window should appear)
2) Blue lines should appear when you move your hand past the camera.
3) Click on the Actions tab and un-check Play Sound.
4) Select Settings… for Save file and Activate Image array.
5) Finally hit the enable button to begin monitoring!

Note: If you see a lot of static or in the motion detection window, go to the Motion Detection window -> Settings Tab -> Detection Level -> Select Auto detect. Step away from the camera and make sure nothing in it’s line of view is moving while it is adjusting.

At this point any movement past the camera should be captured and will be displayed under the Motion Events list. A date & time stamp along with the percentage of movement detected will be provided with each captured frame. If you would like to save higher quality images into a folder, enable the Save file option found under the Action tab in the Motion Detection window. Optionally, you can ask Yawcam to automatically upload each captured image to an FTP server or email it to yourself.

Yawcam unfortunately can not capture video clips at this time. There are however some paid applications which support that feature. This isn’t exactly the BEST security camera technology, but it is definitely a good start. It is also neat to actually make use of your web cam if your laptop has one built in. The best part of all of this may just the fact that Yawcam is completely free and that it only takes a few minutes to setup. Yawcam does support plenty of advance features, however we will not go through setting those up. Just for example, you can quite easily broadcast and stream your camera to any computer with an internet connection or even play scary sounds when your machine detects motion. Anyways if you know of any better apps or have questions, please reply in the comments or visit our forums.

Last week Comedy Central announced the launch of a new website for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” which features clips from every episode which has aired since 1999. (Is also when Jon Stewart signed on as host) Comedy Central also claims that they will soon add full high quality episodes of every show ever filmed. Viacom, the parent company, made a pretty intelligent move by pulling all their clips off YouTube then launching this site. With this launch, viewers will no longer have to visit YouTube for this content and Viacom will make some big bucks through advertising revenue from their new site. This is also a big win for viewers since the content remains free, is now available in high quality, and is fully organized.

“There continues to be a rabid appetite for Comedy Central programming online,” Erik Flannigan VP Digital Media, Comedy Central. “With thedailyshow.com, we have created an online destination that raises the bar by providing an exhaustive video library for everything ‘Daily Show’.”

In addition to allow users to watching videos, The Daily Show’s website offers sharing the clips on a variety of popular social networking and link-sharing sites such as facebook, digg, and del.icio.us. Bloggers and website owners will also have the ability to easily add the clips to their own page. The content has only been made available due to advertisements and sponsors as expected. As a result users will be required to view an advertisement before they can actually begin watching the requested clip. Despite this, Comedy Central has taken a huge step by launching this site. Although NBC, ABC, and FOX now offer the ability to watch new prime-time shows online, no one (to my knowledge) has made their entire history available for free online. Hopefully larger networks will follow Comedy Central’s lead.

I recently purchased a portable fridge for my dorm room on Amazon. When I received the package, everything worked fine, but there was a very visible dent on the side of the door. Being the picky person I am and wanting my full $200 worth, I asked Amazon for a replacement unit. Amazon kindly agreed to replace the damaged unit and since I was in a rush, they even threw in “One-Day Shipping” through UPS. I placed the original unit at the door for UPS to pickup, and when I got home the original package was taken and the replacement was at the doorstep.

The “new” box looked pretty badly beaten up, smashed, and torn. When I opened the box I was horrified to see the fridge’s front door had a HUGE “bullet-hole” looking crater. The rest of the unit was scratched up, smashed inwards, and bulging out. And to top that, the unit was soaked in some weird liquid. I decided to open the fridge door, to make things even worse, it fell right off its hinges.

I once again called Amazon’s Customer Service, to see if I could get a “working” replacement. Amazon didn’t agree to replace it this time, but offered a full refund and free pickup of the trashed unit. I ended up purchasing the unit at Fry’s Electronics, a bay area computer store, which actually ended up being about $25 cheaper since it was on sale. I constantly order items from Amazon and I have literally never received a damaged product. My guess is that this had something to do with UPS’s deliver guy. There have been videos online of delivery personnel throwing packages across driveways to the door step.

As for Amazon’s Customer Support, it was just AMAZING. With a click of a button on their website, they call you, you don’t have to dial a 1-800 number and go through the standard “press one for blah” options. Their representative already has your order number and just requires verifying some personal information for security. The wait times were just 3-4 minutes each time I contacted them, which is quicker than any other experience I’ve had. In addition their reps actually knew what they were doing, they were knowledgeable, polite, and well trained. Without any screaming or yelling they were able to quickly drive me through the return process. In addition the second time I called to return the replacement, they themselves suggested a full refund. I even began to feel a bit guilty for returning that original fridge since it was only slightly damaged, but then realized this is the way Customer Service should be!

Has anyone else actually had a GOOD experience with any big company’s customer service?

Since the digg started, they have had a large issue combating spammers. This eventually lead to an amazing large list of banned sites. About six months ago this site, Skatter Tech, was for some reason added to that list. We had sent digg a few emails requesting the reason it had been blocked, but we received no response. We expected the ban to be lifted, but it never was until now! Digg has apparently lifted the blacklist on thousands of domains and has implemented a new algorithm for submissions to prevent spam from entering the main page. Hopefully the new code will do the trick and lifting the banned sites will not cause an inflation in spam.

Anyways, for our readers, this means the “digg” link found besides the del.icio.us on our permalink pages will now function properly. (No more submission error messages) Finally, if you find any of our articles “digg worthy” you are welcome to submit them.

Today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Verizon Wireless announced V CAST Mobile TV and two new phones to go along with it. The upcoming service will allow subscribed customers using either of the two new phones to watch standard TV channels “on-the-go.” Verizon Wireless is expected to launch Mobile TV by the end of March ‘07.

V CAST Mobile TV:
If you are wondering if this is different from the current V Cast Video, it is completely different. The currently available service only allows viewing short clips from major broadcasting networks, while Mobile TV will allow watching the same live broadcasted content you receive 24 hours a day on your regular TV. During the initial launch only certain TV channels such as CBS, Comedy Central, Fox, MTV, and NBC will be available, but more are expected to added the lineup soon after. Also since the content isn’t “on demand” you will need to check a program guide. This very similar to the grid guides found on Cable or Satellite TVs for finding timings when shows are aired. The schedules can be found on any Mobile TV enabled phones.

The 2 New Phones:
The first two phones to support this new service will be the Samsung SCH-u620 and the LG VX9400. Both phones feature a large and bright LCD display for viewing Mobile TV content. Also along with the new service, the phones will continue to support the “NOW standard” features such as V CAST Music/Video/Games, Mobile Web, and Get It Now. The two phones feature a 1.3 megapixel camera/camcorder, Bluetooth (stereo headset support), speakerphone, and microSD expansion for music storage. A neat multitask feature will mute media (or pause if music) when a phone call is received and continue playback right after hanging up.

Pricing:
Verizon Wireless has stated that pricing for the V CAST Mobile TV will not be available until the service is actually launched. The current V CAST service costs $15/month so they will probably charge another $10. And as for the two phones, the pricing hasn’t been set yet, but will be available in the weeks prior to launch. I’d expect both two be quite pricy because of the new features, but hopefully below $200 with a new plan.

Over the past few days Skatter Tech has been working on a mobile version of our site and it is finally up and running. To access our site from a mobile phone simply enter skattertech.com into the address as you would on any computer (no special URLs required). The portable web pages are XHTML complaint and should work on most WAP 2.0 phones, PDAs, Pocket PCs, and similar devices. From our testing, we found it to work on Verizon WAP 2.0 supported phones, Windows-based Pocket PCs, and on the Blackberry. (also works on the PSP!) If you’ve got a mobile device with a browser, let us know what you are using and whether our site works.

After 5 long years, yesterday Microsoft finally announced Internet Explorer 7.0. Other than the thousands of security and stability patches that have been applied to IE6, this is by far the largest update since 2001. Microsoft has new built in security tools to supposedly make IE7 much safer than its predecessor. The final edition has been available for download from Microsoft’s website since yesterday, however it won’t appear in the “Windows Update” check until later next month.

Although IE7 is a major improvement over IE6, most Firefox users who upgrade will definitely not find any specific features as strikingly innovative. Microsoft’s IE7 page (hilariously) proudly presents the following as their browser’s new and innovative features:

A New Theme & Layout

Tabbed Browsing

Better Printing

RSS Feed Support

Instant Search Box

Improved security

The initial feature everyone is guaranteed to notice is tabbed browsing. Ignoring the other features, this is probably the most powerful addition to IE7. There is not much new it will bring for Firefox or Opera users, since they already have tabbed browsing, custom themes, search boxes, rss feeds, and are already much safer. The new layout will take quite a while to get adjusted too, since items such as the refresh, stop, and go buttons are now placed in quite awkward locations.

Despite the lack of new technology, this was a much needed and necessary update for Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is still hard to believe; disregarding the internal technical improvements, that this is all Microsoft could come up with over the last 5 years. If you wish to upgrade you can download it from microsoft.com/ie or wait until it is pushed out through Windows Update sometime next month. Whether you like it or not you better get used to it since it will be the default browser on all Windows machines for at least the next few years.

(more info here) Since then the service has been offered to the public, but on an invite-only basis. But last week Google finally finished moving servers and opened Writely up for the public. Unlike other Google Products, which require use or creation of a free Google Account, Writely is available for everyone. To register click here, enter your email address, pick a password, and done!

The “web word processor” is still in beta, therefore there are many changes that must be made. Google’s first step will probably be to transfer all user accounts onto the “Google Account” system. (Google is in the process of moving Blogger over) Another step would probably be to change the GUI to look more like Google Spreadsheets. Anyways give this service a try, its great way of accessing your documents when your away from your machine. Now all we need is Google Presentations (aka. PowerPoint).

After setting up over 180 access points costing over $1 million, Google has finally unleashed free WiFi Internet Access for the residents of Mountain View, CA. Google claims that over 90% of their hometown now has coverage and that their free WiFi service will offer speeds of up to 1MB/s down/up. With the launch of this service, anyone in the area can access the internet at speeds reaching close to what most DSL providers offer in the area. Google hopes to gain revenue in return by driving users through their portal on launch and introducing users to other service. Google also boasted that they may even raise the bandwidth if there is enough demand, however denied any plans of launching free Nationwide WiFi.

“It has been has been tremendously rewarding to partner with the local government, the schools, the library, the neighborhood associations, and all of our trusted testers to introduce the power of free wireless Internet connectivity to the city.” Minnie Ingersoll

To utilize Google’s free WiFi you must be in Mountain View (signal map), have a 802.11b/g network card, and a free Google Account. After finding/connecting to a “GoogleWiFi” access point, open a browser and a Google WiFi page should appear. After logging in, you should have access to the internet. Since the traffic between you computer and the access point is unencrypted, we suggest using Google’s Secure Access software.

Since Digg has not officially released their API to the public it has hard for developers to create applications to work easily with Digg. There have been many extensions which have allowed Digg users to easily submit stories to digg; however most of these have either been limited to certain operating systems and/or browsers. Therefore I made this little universal JavaScript Bookmarklet, which will automatically submit the URL of the page your browser is currently on, to Digg. The Digg This Bookmarklet has been tested and has functioned successfully with Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Apple Safari, however it has not yet been tested with any other browsers. If you have found new compatibility, have any suggestions/fixes, or have found any issues please reply in the comments.

To add the “Digg This Bookmarklet” to your bookmarks do the following:

Mozilla Firefox: Drag and drop the digg logo onto your bookmarks toolbar. Or Right-click on the digg logo and “Bookmark this link”

Internet Explorer: Right-click on this link and press “Add to Favorites”

Apple Safari: Drag and drop the digg logo onto the bookmarks toolbar.

Sprint recently contacted Skatter Tech and offered us an opportunity to participate in their “Ambassador Program”. The program is for Sprint to help themselves learn more about their products and services; they do so by selecting individuals to test out their products. We replied and agreed to join the program and we were immediately accepted. In their confirmation message they stated that they would be sending us a Sprint Power Vision phone and would also provide 6-months of all-access service. (means unlimited free calling) They will also provide allow unlimited access to their Music Store, TV Broadcasts, Games, and Web/Data Access. All this in return for our feedback. (we may also get a TiVo Series 3 for testing soon)

It turned out to be a Samsung MM-A920, which retails at $300 on Sprint’s Store. The phone should arrive within 2-3 weeks. The phone seems to have the the top hardware specs: bluetooth, extra memory, 1 megapixel camera w/ flash, speakerphone, and more. This looks like a great phone and we hope it will be. We will throw up a full review of the phone and their new services as soon as we it.

Google Mobile has just introduced a new feature to their service which allows accessing Google News from any cell phone. With the service you can get the latest news right from Google News. The new feature allows full access to the latest Top Stories, U.S., World, Entertainment, Sports, Sci/Tech, Business, and Health categories. The service already offers Web, Image, Local, and Mobile Searches in addition to the personalized homepage service they recently launched. The service is still in BETA, like most Google products, but still works great. Expect to see more features for this service soon. To get to G-News Mobile, type google.com/xhtml into your mobile phone’s browser and hit the “News” link.

Google News for mobile devices keeps you updated on current news articles when you’re on the go. You can access top headlines, browse through news categories, or search for exactly the stories you want all in a phone-friendly format that’s easy to read and navigate. All you need is a web-enabled phone. [From Google Mobile]

A few days ago TiVo started to make downloadable content available not only to BETA testers, but all broadband connected TiVo Series 2 owners. TiVo also is letting TiVo Series 2 owners download a free movie as part of a TiVo Research project. To get this free download go to TiVo Research’s page and enter your TiVo Central Online username and your TiVo Service Number. If you qualify, which most people should, then the movie will be downloaded onto your TiVo around November 23.

Note: This is not available to people who own DIRECTV DVRs and only service numbers starting with 110, 130, 140, 230, 240, 264, 275, 540, 565, 590, or 595 are elgible. You can find your service number either in your TiVo Central Online page or under System Information on your TiVo.
