EarPeace Technologies: Livewires (Review) - Thursday, December 20, 2007
Every once in a while you stumble over a product that is so marvelous you wonder if you’ve actually discovered the holy grail. A creation that offers something for everyone, and at a price that is affordable. It’ll suit you whether you’re a neophyte or a connoisseur. Fortunately for us, one of those little gems has come to our attention recently from a small company in California. EarPeace Technologies presents us with the Livewires in ear monitors.
EarPeace Technolgies has taken up the task of producing a custom molded in-ear monitor (IEM) for the masses. Traditionally worn by (and only affordable for) professional artists on stage during concerts, the Livewires have opened a segment of the audio market for many who can appreciate the sound quality and comfort that custom molded earphones have to offer. Custom molded IEM’s offer improved comfort over normal universal headphones. Even though a plethora of different tips made of different materials and different shapes are available for standard headphones, a significant amount of people still discover comfort issues with those. While the fit of universals may work for some, it frequently becomes fatiguing after a period of time. Livewires seem to disappear once you insert them in your ears. In my experience I’ve worn them for over eight hours without experiencing any comfort issues. A custom molded IEM offers all of the noise isolating and sound quality properties of a normal universal IEM, yet also offers a level of comfort no universal IEM can achieve. Livewires are EarPeace’s first forray into the audio market and it looks like they have a strong chance of being rookie of the year.
Purchasing a set of Livewires isn’t as simple as going to your local white box store and ringing them up at the register. Since Livewires are custom molded, there are a few steps involved in making a purchase. The first step would be to contact EarPeace Technologies or one of their distributors (list included at the bottom). The folks over at Livewires are all very friendly and will help you accordingly with your inquiry. They’ll eventually refer you to a local audiologist to have impressions of your ears made. The appointment normally only takes around 15 minutes. The impression material is thick goop that feels strange, but doesn’t cause any discomfort during the procedure. Once you have your impressions the next step would be to ship them over to EarPeace Technologies. They’ll have your Livewires made at their lab and you should have your brand new set of headphones within a few weeks. Read More
Proporta - iPod Touch Screen Protector - Wednesday, December 19, 2007
The iPod Touch might be the “king” of all portable media players, but isn’t exactly the most robust device. If you are a iPod Touch owner, pay attention, this is an essential accessory. The enormous touch screen display has been left unprotected and is bound to easily gather scratches with everyday use. To protect the touch screen, Proporta offers a high quality “advance screen protector”. The protective sheet isn’t permanent, but it grips onto the iPod Touch with enough strength so it won’t slide off. If necessary it can be easily removed without any remnants. In fact the protective sheet can be washed when it collects too much dust and then reapplied. In addition, unlike Proporta’s Universal Screen Overlay, which we reviewed a few months ago, this overlay sheet has been pre-cut specifically for the iPod Touch. All you’ll have to do is clean the iPod’s screen using the included lint-free cloth, apply it, and smooth out any air pockets with the application card. (The touch screen’s responsiveness remains about the same.)
The overlay sheet normally costs $9.95, but with the coupon code “SKATTERTECH” (no quotes), you’ll receive a 10% discount! It’s a good price considering that the iPod Touch costs nearly $300 or $400 depending on whether you’ve got the 8GB or 16GB model. We highly recommend purchasing some sort of protection for your screen if own an iPod Touch, whether it’s from Proporta or from another vendor. In addition the overlay reduces screen glare and Proporta even offers lifetime warranty if it were to become damaged. It’s available for purchase on Proporta’s website, follow the link below to get one.

Creative Introduces 32GB ZEN! - Monday, December 3, 2007
Earlier today, Creative Technology announced a 32GB edition of their flash-based credit card-sized Creative ZEN. Other than for the larger capacity, the ZEN doesn’t seem to have changed a bit from the 4GB/8GB/16GB models, which we reviewed last month. The ZEN features a 2.5-inch display, has a FM radio, voice recorder, SD expansion, and can playback music/photos/videos. As a bonus, it will support listening to unprotected media from Amazon MP3 and iTunes Plus. Creative hasn’t yet stated when the 32GB ZEN will be available in the United States, but it will hit stores by mid-December in Singapore. According to Creative’s press release, the player will cost $549 Singapore Dollars which converts to approximately $380 US Dollars. For more information on the Creative ZEN, checkout our in depth review.
Note To Apple: When will we be getting our 32GB flash-memory iPod Touch???

When Facebook Apps Go Wrong - Sunday, December 2, 2007
I had been an avid Facebook user for over an year, but I’ve been reconsidering after the launch of Facebook Apps. The days when all Facebook offered was Photos, Groups, Events, Notes, and Posted Items were simple times. Today we’ve got over 450+ photo, 400+ music , 450+ video, 1000+ gaming, and 1000+ sports applications. And that’s nothing, as of now, Facebook is less than 200 short of reaching 10,000 pointless applications! Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of useful apps, but for the most part the majority of these tools are useless. Having to deal with hundreds of application invitations every time I login has become quite painful. For example, why on earth would anyone need a Top Friends list or a Super Wall when Facebook already has a fully functioning friends list and wall? Facebook seriously needs to implement an option to allow users to opt-out or block some of these applications.
The next most horrendous part is how long it’s starting to take to load some people’s profiles and how lengthy they have become. Just to give everyone an glimpse of how bad Facebook can get, take a look at four images provided above. I created temporary Facebook Profile and added the first 20 pages of the most popular Apps. The page was in fact so long that I couldn’t even generate a single screen shot. Fortunately I haven’t run into anyone’s profile that was this bad, but it is definitely going in that direction. Facebook should maybe consider placing a limit on the amount of applications a user can have active at a time. Hopefully the folks over at Facebook will spend time fixing up the mess they made by launching Facebook Applications instead of wasting resources on other projects like Facebook Ads.
