LG Voyager (VX10000) – Verizon Wireless 138

LG Voyager - Verizon

The phone everyone’s been waiting for is finally here. The LG Voyager, which is also known as the LG VX10000, is an upgrade to the popular LG enV (VX9900), which we reviewed around this time last year. Skatter Tech was lucky enough to get a hold of this unit, courtesy of Verizon Wireless, and I’ve been putting it to the test since I got it last week. Just for a quick overview, the Voyager features a touch-screen display plus an internal wide-screen, a full HTML browser, a QWERTY keyboard, Mobile TV, and a ton of other new features. Although LG seems to be taking their communicator series in a whole new direction, I would still say that Voyager is definitely a worthy upgrade to the enV.

LG VX10000 Specifications:

  • Provider: Verizon Wireless (1.9GHz / 800MHz CMDA)
  • Form Factor: Laptop-like w/ QWERTY keyboard
  • Dimensions: 4.64H x 2.12W x 0.71D (inches)
  • Battery Life: 240 mins talk time & 480 hours standby
  • Screens: 480 x 240 pixel TFT external & internal
  • Digital Camera: 2 megapixel camera and camcorder
  • Storage: ~185MB internal + microSD (8GB max)
  • Special: external touch screen and mobile tv
  • Others: Bluetooth 1.2 + Stereo Speakerphone
  • Price: $299 with a new 2-year contract

LG Voyager Body: – 5/5 stars
The VX10000 is a bit larger than your average phone, but no one should be complaining once they see what it has to offer. The phone stands 4.64-inches tall, is .71-inches thick, and 2.12-inches wide. The Voyager retains the same height as it’s processor, the enV, but is slightly wider and thinner as well. The phone should fit into most pockets, but might be a bit of a stretch for tight jeans. On the front of the phone, you’ll find the large touch screen display followed by the SEND, CLR, and END hard-keys lined up at the bottom. On the left of the phone, there’s a camera button, a spring-loaded hold key, and a toggle volume control. The microSD card expansion and the 2.5mm headset jack are the left side, while the charging port, which doubles as the USB connector, is on the bottom. You can charge your phone via USB as well! Other than that, there’s a two mega pixel Camera centered at the top on the back and a battery pack right below it. One the inside of the phone, there’s another display located between two speakers on the top portion and the illuminated QWERTY keyboard on the bottom. The keys are well spaced out are are large enough to type quickly, making it possibly the best keyboard I have seen on a phone to date. Also, unlike the enV, the Voyager actually sits flat on a surface, so no wobbling!

LG Voyager vs. LG enV LG VX10000 vs. LG VX9900

The Two Screens: – 5/5 stars
The biggest disappointment in the LG enV was the extremely small external display. All that has now changed since the LG Voyager’s 2.81-inch touch screen display takes over the entirety of the front and even replaces the numeric keypad. The phone’s internal display is also 2.81-inches diagonal, but isn’t a touch screen. Both the screens have a resolution of 400 by 240 pixels and a color depth of 262K. The quality of both displays were excellent. They were bright and clear enough to view in direct sunlight. The accuracy and responsiveness of the touch screen display was great, but some buttons and items were too small and hard to reach, so interface could use a bit of work.

Music Player: – 4/5 stars
I had a great experience with the Music Player on the enV and was hoping for a big upgrade, but it seems as though there hasn’t been any chances. The main complain would be that the interface for the player is completely different on the external and internal displays. The interface for the outside portion has been designed for use with the touch screen and works fairly well. It actually looks quite neat and allows browsing by Songs, Albums, Artists, or Genres. You’ll have the ability to purchase music from the mobile store, shuffle your music, and search your library. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the internal interface. The music player on the internal display is still using the standard theme found on the enV and a plenty of other Verizon Wireless phones. In addition the developers have managed to make such as simple program actually look worse and just for starters it doesn’t even utilize the full display. Instead the program has been cropped to a 320 by 240 pixel frame with black borders. Despite this, the playback functions work quite smoothly and the player didn’t have any other major flaws. For supported formats, the Voyager can playback unprotected MP3, WMA, and AAC files in addition to songs purchased through the phone. (Will work with Amazon MP3 & iTunes Plus!) Overall the player is functional and even displays Album Artwork for a nice touch, but it could have been better.

Speakers & Headphones: – 3.5/5 stars
One reason I liked the enV and its predecessor the LG VX9800 (aka “The V”) was the fact that they all had built-in stereo speakers. The LG Voyager carries on that tradition, but there’s a problem. The speakers in the LG Voyager sounded quite horrible and began to crack terribly even before we got close to reaching full volume. (No bass as well.) I would have expected for an even better experience, but these speakers prove otherwise. Since the LG Voyager is also a music phone, I would have also expected them to implement a standard 3.5mm headset connector. Instead, the Voyager maintains a 2.5mm headset jack meaning that you’ll need to purchase an adapter for use with your regular headphones. As Bluetooth headsets are becoming so cheap and barely anyone uses wired headsets anymore, I wonder how long it will take for manufacturers to phase out 2.5mm jacks and replace them with 3.5mm ones. Fortunately, listening to music with headphones on the VX10000 was a much better experience than with the speakers, but quality was still no where as good as on the VX9900.

LG Voyager - Camera LG VX10000 - Camera Sample

Digital Camera & Camcorder: – 3.5/5 stars
The LG Voyager features a 2.0 megapixel camera, which also functions as a camcorder. Photos can be taken at a maximum resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels, while videos can be recorded at a max of 320 by 240 pixels. No improvement for either of those functions have been made since, as those were also the maximums on the enV. The camera and camcorder allow setting the white balance and choosing color effects for captured content. The external display can be used to take self portraits when the phone is flipped open. The camcorder can record up to 1-hour videos, however only clips under 30-seconds can be emailed. On the other hand, images of any size can be emailed. The camera also has an auto focus function, which drastically improves the quality of your photos. The part that was quite disappointing was the fact that LG has removed the retractable cover, which protected the lens, and the built in flash, which was quite handy in low-lighted situations. Overall, the image quality seems to have actually degraded.

microSD + Syncing: – 4.5/5 stars
LG has taken a big jump with microSD technology, now supporting 8GB cards. That’s a fairly good increase considering that the enV was limited to 2GB microSD cards. Although 8GB cards might be a bit pricey at this point, you should be able to purchase a 4GB microSD card online for under $40. As for syncing music, it was as simple as it could get. Your computer will recognize the Voyager as portable media player (mass storage device), so no additional drivers were required. You will, however, need to pop in the CD and install the drivers if you do wish to use your phone as a data modem. Once the device was recognized I was able to use Windows Media Player to transfer the music onto the Voyager. If you prefer to directly copy files onto the phone using the file explorer, that works smoothly as well. Mac OS X users, unfortunately, will have to use an SD card adapter to copy their music onto the microSD card since USB drivers are not yet available. Even Windows users will also end up having use a SD card reader/write occasionally, since it isn’t possible to access your photos and videos when using USB.

LG Voyager (VX10000) - Left LG Voyager (VX10000) - Right

Bluetooth: – 4/5 stars
There hasn’t been exactly too much improvement with Bluetooth technology either. The LG Voyager continues to use Bluetooth v1.2, which the enV already had. Most new phones including the LG Muziq, which we reviewed a few months ago, and the Apple iPhone now boast a Bluetooth v2.0 platform with Enhanced Data Rate. Despite this, the LG Voyager was still able to work perfectly with my Samsung WEP200 headset, which uses Bluetooth v2.0. The VX10000 also supports using Bluetooth for use as a dial-up modem, with wireless stereo headsets, for transfering phonebook/calendar entries, and sending images to your computer. So it should still be able to do just about everything important.

HTML Browser: – 5/5 stars
First off, let me say that this is in no way comparable to the Safari browser on the iPhone and iPod Touch, which is amazing. This is, however, a HUGE improvement over the standard BREW browser found on most Verizon Wireless phones, which could only handle WAP pages. The browser is simple, easy-to-use, and works with both the external touch screen and the internal display. Even large web pages (ex. digg.com) loaded eventually, but using it was not practical since it took too long to load or navigate. The browser doesn’t support flash or ajax, but was sufficient enough for viewing text, images, and links. Most of the websites we tested it with worked surprisingly well. When using the external display you’ll be able to drag the page around with a finger, otherwise you’ll have to use the four-way navigation pad. Additional “screen optimized” and “text only” views are available along with the zoom function. The Voyager also delivers the web content over a 3G network which is faster than the iPhone’s 2G.

LG VX10000 - Interface & Browser

The Interface: 4.5/5 stars
The LG Voyager external interface is probably the most attractive interface I’ve seen on a phone from Verizon. To use the screen, you’ll have unlock it first by either clicking on the un-lock key on the screen or by pressing the hold key on the left spine. At the bottom there are four quick access buttons: Messages, Dial Pad, Menu, and Phone book. Clicking anywhere else on the screen will bring up a shortcut menu with even more icons to different apps. Just about all the phone’s features including the music player, navigator, web browser, V Cast Videos, camera, and text messaging is use able through the external screen. There are some applications including Mobile Email and Get It Now programs that can’t be used through the external display, so you’ll have flip open the phone. Another neat hardware feature implemented into the Voyager is tactile feedback. When something on the touch screen is clicked, the phone emits a vibrating impulse indicating that an action has been detected. The internal interface has received a clean makeover, but will remain very familiar to enV owners. The enV’s “Email Key” has now been replaced another shortcut menu, offering easy access to plenty of functions. Although the interface wasn’t perfect, it looks good, was usable, and was quite impressive.

GPS Navigator: – 5/5 stars
One feature I did truly did enjoy was the built-in GPS Navigator. The program, which costs $9.99 per month, gives subscribers access to maps, turn-by-turn directions, and local searches. The part that I like the most was that the voice narration actually read out street and highway names instead of simply stating “Turn left ahead” or “Make a right turn”. For example, actually reads out “Turn left onto Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road,” “Exit freeway on the right for San Francisco,” and “Keep right on Mission Blvd.” Most navigators I’ve used including those built into Lexus/BMW cars and portable Garmin/Magellan, couldn’t do this. The one’s I’m talking about were over an year old, so I’m sure new ones can read out names and do much more. Purchasing a decent navigator can cost a few hundred dollars, so spending $120 for a year of subscription isn’t too bad. In addition, if you don’t want subscribe and don’t use your navigator that often, you can pay a one-time fee of $2.99 for 24-hour access. Overall navigation tool was well polished, worked on both screens, and will come in handy if you’re ever lost.

LG Voyager QWERTY Keyboard

Messaging: – 5/5 stars
In addition to text, picture, and video messaging, the VX10000 also has an easy-to-use email client which will work instantly with your Yahoo! Mail, Live Mail, AOL/AIM, or Verizon accounts. If you do happen to have your own server or use another mail service such as Gmail, you can even enter in your own POP3/IMAP and SMTP servers. The only downside was that the functionality was quite basic and didn’t even allow opening links in messages. Despite this, it remains a good way of getting a sneak peak of your inbox, replying to messages, and composing new ones when you’re away from your computer. The phone also has a built in Instant Messaging client which will work with AOL, Windows Live, and Yahoo! protocols. The program runs smoothly on both screens, allows viewing your buddy lists, and participating in multiple conversations at once. Both the Mobile Email and Mobile IM clients have the ability to run in the background and display notifications when new content reaches your phone.

Other Goodies: – 5/5 stars
The LG VX1000 comes with a bunch of extra tools including a calculator, calendar/date-book, alarm clocks (3), stopwatch, world clock, notepad, tip calculator, and a voice recorder (1 hour max). The address book can hold one thousand entries with five numbers and two emails per contact. Unique ringtones and photos can be set for each contact as well. The voice dialing feature allows making calls by reading out names in your address book or dictating numbers to dial. The final extra feature we’d like to touch on is Mobile TV. We would have reviewed this feature, but there was one problem. What’s the problem? There was no coverage in our area. The service only works in three cities in California and a total of 25 cities through the entire United States.

Despite my minute complains over speaker/headphones quality, the music player, and camera, the LG VX10000 is still probably the best phone offered by Verizon Wireless. In my opinion this will be a big seller for the holiday season and will probably be difficult to get a hold of. I strongly recommend this phone if you plan to actually use the features it offers, otherwise going with a more compact phone will suffice. Verizon Wireless has even been kind enough to throw in a USB cable so you don’t have to purchase a Music Essentials Kit to sync your music. If you plan to purchase this phone it will be available online and in stores on November 21st, 2007. You should also be able to pre-order the phone by calling Verizon Wireless or visiting their website. The LG Voyager will run you nearly $299 after signing a new 2-year contract and submitting a $50 mail-in-rebate. If you are eligible for upgrade, you should be able to get another $50 or $100 kicked off price based on your current calling plan. Overall the phone will take a bit getting used and even though it’s a bit on the pricey end, you are bound to enjoy what it has to offer.

Deal Alert: LG Voyager for $199! (with new 2-year contract)

I am ready to order the Voyager, was going to go for the Iphone, but then the Voyager appeared. My Verizon contract is up in 2 months, so I can get the $100 off which makes a difference. It just seems like it’s very involved and the monthly bill is going to be up there. Feedback??

don says:

you will be able to get a $40 plan which is just 450mins talk and no text/browser stuff. If you want that type of stuff you’ll have to pay around $65 which give you the mobile tv, text messaging, web browser, mobile email, and a whole lot more. At least you have the choice of choosing what you want and don’t want. my friends with iphone’s are going broke since they have to pay $60 a month plus tax and stuff. they can’t go to cancel it as well too becuase then there’s a closing fee. (very expensive)

j. says:

Im on Verizon and no way an ATnT fan but they just created a cheaper plan for the iPhone… u have to go on ur account and get rid of the internet feature, it doesnt require any changes or charges to ur account.

alan says:

I had the Iphone…good phone at best but went back to Verizon because of BAD BAD BAD service, dropped call and slow internet with Iphone at&t. Bought the Voyager and so far way better over all!!! Still in the learning curve but Verizon is way better than att in my area. Funny thing is 90% (minus phone) of th iphone still works IE wifi ipod widgets etc…

Scott says:

My Voyager worked great for about 18 hours. All of a sudden, the screen shows only the Verizon logo, does not boot up even after removing and reinstalling the battery, and won’t power off unless I remove the battery. I called Verizon, and after hearing the representative say, “That’s so strange” about 15 times, they, of course, told me they are sold out, and I have to wait several weeks for a replacement. I hope this is not the start of a bad experience.

mary says:

Scott-I just ordered one last night on-line & will have it by Tues

Sean says:

I have had my Voyager for about 5 days. It has worked great, even in rural Virginia. I did break the charger already by tripping on the cord and ripping it out of the wall, but I just charge it with the USB now until I can get down to a store to replace it. Good thing I got the total equipment coverage. Does any know any tools or tricks for transferring videos, files, etc to the phone without just using the card? Such as transferring to the internal memory? I would like to setup my mp3s as my ringtones too.

Curt says:

Have had mine since 11/21 and I am still learning what it can do. Takes a bit of learning on how to scroll using the touch screen. Transferred some music, took awhile for VISTA to find the phone. Tried following directions after installing VCast Music manger but got better results doing it my way. Sound when closed is poor for ringtones. Ringtones are really bad, you would think they would give you some really nice ones for this phone but I guess they want you to pay for the better ones. Music sounds fairly good, much better when using ear buds. Anyone know how use a song from the playlist on the phone and make it a ringtone, easily? May be in the phone but I cannot find it yet…..lots of stuff. Plastic holder is really bad; phone opens on its own, needs to be in a case type holder. Calls have been great no drops. Have the VCast pak for $15, no TV in my area, but we do have REV A. Great phone so far, may even keep it.

mary says:

I ordered the Voyager online & won’t get til Tues. Since I already have Verizon service, I guess that I will haveto take my phone into one of the stores to have my numbers transferred. Otherwise, would have to do myself manually. Anyone know, if I have to go to the store for the number transfer??

Mike says:

Mary – you can activate your new phone online from the verizon ‘My Account’ page. You dont have to go to the store to do it.

mary says:

thanks Mike, so I can activate & @ the same time transfer all my names/numbers?? if so, that would be great~

@Sean
The best solution would be BitPim (www.bitpim.org), it was one of the best tools for the LG VX9900. Unfortunately it doesn’t support the LG VX10000 at this time, but they are bound to add support very soon. It should allow transferring contacts, notes, photos, videos, ringtones, and much more!

@Curt
Using your MP3s as ringtones are usually locked by Verizon. They want you to buy ringtones from them instead. To use your own files, use BitPim, which I mentioned in my comment to Sean.

@Mary
You’ve got a few ways of restoring your numbers, going to the store isn’t the only option. If your old phone has bluetooth and supports contact transfer, you can send all those numbers over to Voyager. The second option is to use the Backup Assistant application. It is free, if you use the “My Account” option online to manage your account and pay bills. First backup your contacts on your old phone then activate the Voyager and restore all the contacts! Hope that helps!

tyler says:

This is very helpful reading all these tips. thank you. does anyboby know the monthly fee of the internet on the voyager? and can you buy all the Vcast, online, navigation, email, etc. individually? or is it all one big package?

Rich says:

I am getting the voyager in the next few days. I just ordered it from Verizon! After days of arguing they are finally letting me upgrade to the Voyager from the enV. Can any of you who currently have the Voyager tell me if you can save a sound from a picture message as a ringtone like you can on the enV? On the enV once you received the picture message that had the sound clip in it you could press “options” and then select “save as ringtone” or “save sound as ringtone” (I forget the exact verbiage)and once you did that it would show up as one of your available ringtones. It would be a huge help if you could tell me this. Thanks so much!

Rich

i just got the voyager and im trying to put some pics on it, i have vista and i put the cd in and go to install the modem and i keep getting a error,it says an installation support file c:\users\tom\appdata\local\temp\c3abe126-2bb2-4246-bfe1-6797679b3579}\isrt.dll access is denied… i have no idea wat that means or how to fix it. does anyone have a idea?

mary says:

any help with the scrolling thru the contacts? it seems so hard to control, spins quickly & after you enter the beginning alphabet @ top, the only way to get thru the list is to scroll, not able to put second/third letter etc

tom says:

i just push in and scroll my finger down and it goes thru all of them

@mary and @tom
The best you can do to narrow down to a contact on the external screen is to keep pressing the group of letters until you find the starting letter of your contact’s name. After that you’ll have to scroll your way through. Fortunately on the internal screen, you can just type a name on the keyboard. I have found voice dialing to work extremely well (for me), so that’s eliminated part of the problem.

James says:

I am already a Verizon Wireless customer and currently have the sch-a990, I want to upgrade but my 2 year is not avail. until March, is there a way to get the phone at the “new 2year agreement price” w/o having to pay the retail price? I know Rich you said you had to argue with them to upgrade your envy, waht else can be done? Can’t Verizon just sell you the phone w/o all the hassle of a plan and all that? What if I wanted to just buy it as a gift?

Rich says:

Verizon’s new every two is not actually every two years. It’s every 22 months. I heard from one of their customer service reps that they recently changed the policy so that you can upgrade after only 18 months. You may have to argue a bit. I definitely have my best luck, when I have a dispute, with dialing 611. They are very closely monitored while the branches do their own little thing. Most of the managers in the stores are useless and just plain don’t want to help you. It actually took me 3 days and many phone calls to get them to let me upgrade to this phone. I would say that someone had mentioned that customers were able to get their new every two credit after 18 months and that Verizon had just recently changed their policy and go from there.

Rich says:

I just tried bitpim and it does work with the Voyager.

mary says:

curious what is bitpim?

Rich says:

it lets you add your own ring tones among a bunch of other things…

james says:

Actually now that you mention it I heard something like that to but put it aside given Verizonwireless does not have the best customer service reps. Thanks for the input I’m going to call today. This was so much easier when I worked for Verizon Core and could get the phone business to business, man guess I should’ve stayed! Anyway thanks again.

Has anyone else had an issue with setting a alert for a picture message? My alerts work for voice mail and text messages but not picture messages. Any thoughts?

mike says:

I was just playing around with my voyager right now and im not sure if it was this sight or another but i read the you couldn’t get direct access to sd card wihtout a card reader but if you use the data storage function you get a prompt which allows you to use explorer, which gives you access to the my music folder so you could just dump your music there

shihan says:

Hey does anyone know if you can buy the voyager under a different plan? Becuase I loved the phone, but i have Att and not willing to change it right now.

Rich says:

nope you’re gonna get the same answer everyone else got when the iphone came out! why would you wanna stick with AT&T? verizon has way better coverage!

Neil says:

Rich I’ve been having problems with Bitpim I’m not bad with mods but I just can’t get Bitpim to talk to my phone…what do you think I am doing wrong…are you on a mac or pc?

Rich says:

I’m on a PC. I plugged it an and it found the phone. Try a different USB port and click the button to tell the program to search for a phone.

Tom says:

OK, i am pretty incompotent when it comes to technology, but i just got talked into buying the voyeger by my wife becuase she wanted me to have a good phone for once…..anyway, my questions are this:

1) if i link my phone to my computer, will the computer recognize it or will i need some type of software??

2) If it does recognize it, and i want to make some ringtones out of mp3 i have, do i just click and drag them to the phone?? If yes, are the folders choices obvious (i.e. ringtones, pics, etc).

Thanks for any help.

Edit: one more question:

will i need some additional memory (as in a card) or does the phone have enough memory to transfer over mp3s, ringtones, pics, vids, etc…..if i need a mem card, what do they run??

Rich says:

you need a program called bitpim to transfer the ringtones over and you will need to shorten the sound clip to about 30 seconds so you will need some sort of a wave editor. The ring tones are stored on the phones internal memory so you will not need a memory card for that. However if you want any kind of significant storage you would want to get a memory card. you can find them on amazon.com for about 7 bucks plus shipping (totaling about 14 bucks) just type in “Micro SD Card” and make sure it has an adapter.

Edit: this is what you want to get…
SanDisk 2GB microSD/TransFlash Card with SD Adapter

Brandon says:

Ok, The voyager is a pretty sweet phone but verizon would of gone the extra mile and added a few features in. I haven’t had any problems with the phone except that if it gets cold it slows down quite significantly but there will be updates for that soon enough. I haven’t tried bitpim but i think it will work. does anyone know of any other free ringtone making website other than http://www.myxertones.com because the server is “blocked up” and verizon customers are having trouble receiving the messages oohhhh and the static cling cover that the phone came with is perfect but it needs to be resized to cut it. I unfortunately didn’t notice it was bigger and put the phone into my pocket and wrinkled it so now i took the cling off the inside screen and put it on the outside and my phone is nice and scratch free.

Sidney says:

Has anyone tried to tether a laptop to the Voyager? I have a Treo 700w with an unlimited data plan that is my lifeline when I travel. Unfortunately, I have to use a third-party workaround to access the data plan rather than having to use my voice minutes. It would be nice if I could use a data plan directly on the Voyager. Does anyone know what kind of data plan is offered with the Voyager?

Sidney says:

One more question. I don’t see any mention of begin able to add applications like Word, Excel, etc. Anyone know if these are options?

Tom says:

@ Rich,

Thanks for your help, i will give it a shot. I am assuming it (meaning the Bitpim program) works with other phones….my wife and sons both have chocolates (which are basically free after the mail-in rebate since i purchased the voyager!!!)…..they (meaning my sons) want to make ringtones out of their mp3 song collection they have.

Again, places like this are a wealth of knowledge and beats being talked into buying unessceary accesories at the verizon store.

DR1VER212 says:

I had the voyager for a few days now and love it. Only problem that I find is no speaker phone when in the close position and sometimes it calls one of my contacts on its own. It must rub against my jacket and triggers the call(wierd) has this happen to anyone else?

Rich says:

[Comment ID #38811 Will Be Quoted Here]

yep this happened to me once i guess i bumped the call button…ended up being a girl i hadn’t spoken with in like a year and i got a date out of it! LOL so i love the phone even more!!

Ryan says:

Rich Is it possible for us to communicate on aim or something im tryin to turn an mp3 into a ringtone for my voyager using bitpim

you’re going to have to get a wave editor of some kind to cut the sound clip down to 30 seconds or so before you can add it to your phone.

Does anyone know of an FM Radio Bluetooth wireless headset solution that will work with the LG Voyager? If so, that very cool phone would have it all for the connected sport / tech type.

Thanks!

hey i am getting the voyager in january, (pretty sure at least) can anyone tell me some problems you have had with it. and are they common?

Edit: oh oops! forgot to ask. how much are the internet and email plans? i think the touch screen scares me. the other comments i have read say that the touchscreen is not very good or it freezes. but this phone looks cool and i am just seeing what is wrong with it

Jake says:

Anyone try to sync contacts or retrieve SMS (inbox and outbox) using BitPim? On a PC or Mac via Bluetooth? Can you retrieve images and/or videos from the phone with BitPim?

James says:

I got the Voyager over the weekend, a little disappointed with the browser I was under the impression it would be able to stream video, i.e. youtube, however that doesn’t seem to be the case, unless I’ve gone batty and am not operating properly…?…also I’m having trouble with bitpim, not sure where I’m going wrong but I cannot locate the song manager that allows you to shorten the songs to make ringtones. Any assistance?…

@Andy
Are you trying to get your music to a car stereo or are you looking for a wireless music headset?

@Matt
As always there will be a few problems when the phone is released. From my experience there weren’t any major problems which would limit the phone’s advertised capabilities. If you do buy it now, you can go back to the Verizon Store and get your firmware upgraded when a new release becomes available.

@Jake
BitPim wasn’t compatible with this phone until December 6th. The latest version has some support for the LG VX10000, So try upgrading and hopefully that should start working.

@James
YouTube does work on the phone! Just type “http://m.youtube.com” into the browser and you can now browse through YouTube’s mobile site and hit play to watch any of those videos. It’s data extensive so get a data plan if you plan to use it a lot! You can also go browse popular YouTube vidoes through Verizon’s V Cast. I’ll have to get back to you on the BitPim ringtone stuff.

James says:

Awesome, I love this spread, thanks everyone!…I’ll post also If I find some more about the bitpim…thanks again… cheers.

I just got my Voyager for an early Christmas present from my husband. He preordered and as soon as it was available, he jumped on it. I’ve had it for 4 days now. I must say, “I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!” My favorite. Watching TV. Extremely greate quality (as long as you’re in an area with a good, solid signal). I just can’t put it down. From the games, to my music, to my pictures, and now, just learning that I can record up to one hour of video is awesome! If LG decides to go one up on the next phase, my suggestions are improve the camera capabilities, allow attachments to show on web email (Word, Excel), and possibly add push-to-talk. What’s wrong with a phone that has everything? It satisfies the entertainment factor, as well as those who use business applications. I think some of us are due for an “ALL-N-ONE”.
Thanks. The Voyager is wonderful!!

Does anyone know exactly how to setup bitpim to the voyager. I am having problems with the phone detection and which comm port to use. I have a Mac computer. Thanks

Need to get me a voyager, If Anyone knows where to get a cheap one let me know, i have the service but no the phone and my upgrade is not for another year…thanks highly appriciated.

Julie boolie says:

ok, so i got the voyager and i was trying to set it up w/ bluetooth on my apple computer, it says its paired and everything except for connected, how do i connect it! its very frustrating!!!

James says:

The latest beta (test as they call it) of bitpim recognizes the voyager. I use audacity to shrink my ringtones from mp3′s stored on my PC, once I have that selection I save as an MP3 then add that ring tone to Bitpim, I use 128 for the bitrate, works the best the other settings I just leave as default and it works great, I have an 8 gig card so I’m not worried about memory some of the ringtones can be a little bigger but mostly they are around the 200kb size, I’m still looking for something that can compress them and not have them come out sounding garbled. As far as Movies (If anyone was interested) I use the same software as my I-pod, it’s called Handbrake, it let’s you compress DVD’s into a variety of formats, for the Voyager you want to use MP4 that works the best ( it might be the only one that works not sure) with the 8 gig card I have about 3 movies right now 100 mp3′s tons of pics and 10 or so ringtones and still have like 5 1/2 gigs left. Sidenote: Movies aren’t displayed as good as the I-pod touch, but it beats carrying around 50 different gadgets to entertain yourself.
I also found an emulator that I’m trying to play with now to work on the voyager if anyone is interested in that I will post on that later. Cheers Mates.

Chuck says:

The Voyager is a COOL device that does a lot of COOL things…but it is just too expensive to justify getting when you have a perfectly capable PHONE already (Razr v3m). After all, you use a phone to make phone calls. Anything else is superfluous, really. These carriers do a great job advertising how COOL you will be once you have these things in your possession. But just stick with the old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Come on, I know you can think of a lot better things to spend $350 on…

mary says:

Does anyone know how to delete ALL of the incoming E-mail or do it quickly as the guy in store said it had to be done each individually & I maust have an easy 1000, as I never ck in on the phone. thx

steven says:

I have the LG EnV ..I used to have the LG chocolate (first model) i intruruped my plan for 2 years with my chocolate and after 7 months bought the env in the middle of the plan. So i had to pay 350$ for the retail price! So that means that i have a year a two months left with the EnV. After that i am either buying the Voyager or Iphone. From what my family members say (they have it), it is a very good phone. I cant wait until i get my new phone voyager or iphone. Some one please write a comment and tell which i should get!

@ steven
Some new phones are rolling out from Verizon Wireless within the next 3 months such as the Samsung Glyde and LG VX9700 (prada-like). Both have touch screens which seems to be your interest. The Glyde has a keyboard that slides down instead of a Voyager-format with 2 screens.

mary says:

I am asking again, does anyone know how to delete the E-mail in one fell swoop instead of one at a time? I called Verizon & asked & was told only one at a time is possible. Are you kidding me?? Thx

haro!
im thinking bout getting the voager but just wondering if u can txt with the keypad on the open creen?????????

James says:

I love my LG Voyager phone except for the web browser. It reminds me of trying to surf modern websites using Windows IE version 3.0. Like it’s missing a ton of plug-ins. Instead of viewing graphics I get allot of “object”. Also websites that require Microsoft programs like .asx files won’t work. Video and internet radio stations. In other words most streaming media sites are out of the question unless it’s YouTube mobile. And when looking at really long pages instead of being able to scroll to the actual bottom of the page I have to hit “next” at the bottom of the page to get to the real bottom. What’s that all about?

Otherwise the phone is great. But it really needs a software upgrade for the web browser.

William says:

I got this phone yesterday and it’s great! However, I’ve got a problem or two about my phone:
1) When I accessed the BT (Bluetooth) menu (internal screen), it either reboots or “crashes” my phone. (Keep in mind that my phone is BRAND-NEW and not bought on e-bay or any other medium; I mean that I bought it at a Verizon Wireless store). Anyway, how do I remedy this?

2) I downloaded the screensavers for my phone, but it comes in two “versions”: Internal Screensaver (240×400 pixels) and External Screensaver (400×240 pixels). With that in mind, how do I install it using either the MicroSD card and/or using the software program called BitPim?

Help? Thank you so much!

William

Paulash says:

I got this phone about 2 weeks ago and have been in love with but for one thing (which may end up making me return it). The voice command on it is terrible! Has anyone else had similar problems? Previosly, I used a Jabra bluetooth with my razr and NEVER had a real significant problem with voice dialing and voice commands, but with the Voyager, I’ve been having HUGE issues. I’ll say someone’s name and it will try and dial a random set of numbers. I’ve tried to get around this by “training” the phone and everything, but I haven’t been able to. I spend a lot of time on the road, but I need a phone with reliable voice commands. Has anyone had similar problems and/or solutions?

Kellie says:

Thank you to everyone. I haven’t figured out how to bluetooth my calendar or notepad from pc to phone on my Verizon Voyager. However I did download bitpim after reading your comments and it seems to be working . THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH..

Evan says:

Before getting this phone, i had the Nokia E70. I was utterly crushed once i received my Voyager. Its an expensive and shitty touch phone. Granted, the tactical response is nice and i enjoy the keyboard. However, you can barely customize settings, it doest connect to macs, and its the standard Verizon firmware bullshit. When i buy an expensive phone, i want something that i can play with. The voyager is a sad excuse for a “top of the line” phone. All in all, Verizon should be ashamed, and needs to get real.

Shari says:

Its so sexy. Size does not matter when it comes to the voyager. I’m like obsessed with it.

TG says:

Is Microsoft Word/Excel and all able to be downloaded onto the LG Voyager? Just curious…

Dave says:

Love my Voyager. To clarify a few things for everyone, BitPim is not strictly a “ringtone” tool. It’s more generally a general data interface program that allows you to manipulate your phone book, call logs, and, most importantly saved images and videos. While many enjoy its ability to manipulate ringtones, perhaps more will be interested in the fact that you can take pictures and video with your Voyager and transfer them to your PC without using air time to send them instead. For me, that’s the major point of BitPim.

BitPim is also a very wide open product which addresses dozens and dozens of mobile telephone models, so not every feature you see available in the program works with the Voyager, or works entirely. There are some distortions in using the program, too. For example, to get your saved images from the Voyager, you have to select “get wallpaper” – which, by whatever means, grabs your images for transfer in the process. You wouldn’t know that by looking at the available options for data transfer.

mary says:

I have been told a few times by Verizon that the oly way to delete mt E-mails is individually. Does anyone know how to delete all at once. I got the phone hoping to use for my biz E-mail, but my company (security?) won’t allow use on Treo, etc, never use for my personal E-mail, as on phone all day for work, so pulled the plug this month on using E-mail (saving $)

William says:

Hey. I’ve got a problem with my LG Voyager phone: I haven’t returned it to get a new one but…. anyway, after accessing the BT (bluetooth) menu, my phone reboots. What gives? How do I access the BT menu/settings without it rebooting itself? Let me know! Thank you!

William says:

hey.. I’m just wondering.. regardless of how people record their videos directly from the LG Voyager (assume DEFAULT settings)… what is the default video bit rate while recording? I know that it can record up to 30 fps and up to a maximum of 1 hour (60 minutes or 3600 seconds). Anyway… back to this: what is the default video (and audio if so) bit rate? Thank you!

Lily :) says:

I really like the Voyager. It is a very user friendly design. I would have preferred the sidekick slide to the voyager but the service at Verizon trumps t-mobile by far. I was wondering if there was anyway to have my voyager run on a similar operating system as any of the sidekick’s or iphone. The web browser is just was to slow for me. Another complaint that I have about this phone is that you can not run two things at once… for example with the sidekick you can close one thing and wait for it to load while playing a game and the music runs even when you shut the music window. On the voyager you have to quit what your doing to do anything else. Do you guys have any suggestions for me?

@Lilly
Unfortunately changing the OS isn’t a simple tasks on these phones. And even if you were successful in doing so, you’ll run into tons of other problems with compatibility with the service provider. I would suggest looking for another phone other than the LG Voyager if it doesn’t meet your needs. Skatter Tech will be publishing a review of the LG Dare quite soon, so I suggest taking a look into that device. I had a chance to mess with it for a bit and I had to say I was truly impressed by what it offered!

@William
That seems to be a bug, it shouldn’t be doing that. I suggest you take the phone to Verizon and ask them to do a firmware update in case it doesn’t have the latest software installed. If it still is problematic, let us know. Some one will have a solution for sure.!

@Ronnie
There are several ways to get pics from the phone to your machine. You can email it, upload it to the verizon service, use bluetooth to transfer the data, get a USB data cable, or use a microSD Card. I would suggest just using a microSD card and a SD card adapter to copy the files to your machine. It is by far the fastest and the easiest way of doing it. (the cards are quite cheap too!)

hey i have a question.. my voyager plays ringtones ridiculously quiet even wen the volume is turned up all the way. I really like the fone but the only problem i have with it is the ringtone volume, it will only play on the inside speakers, and will not play on the outside ones. i even purchased a ringtone to see if it would make a difference but its still ridiculously quiet. Is there anythign i can do as far as the settings or anything like that? please let me know

nina says:

Yeah the Voyager is a cool phone, but it would be nice if verizon would tell you before you sign up and buy their phone thatthey are anti-mac. As a Mac user, its really irritating that I cant download any drivers to use my brand new fancy Voyager phone with my computer. I have not run into this issue for a long time, and I am really surprised that they refuse to publish drivers for both windows and macintosh.

I am having the same problem with the phone shutting down when I’m browsing. After 2 phones, 3 trips to Verizon and several tech support calls, I was finally told that this is a known issue and that the next update should fix that. They could not not give me an ETA for the update.

Dawn says:

You have to buy the music manager software from Verizon.

SCOTT LASKY says:

I just purchased the Voyager Titanium 5 days ago- looks great- but: 1- batt life short- settings for lights probably affecting it. However, While on a phone call, phone lock turned on- had to unlock screen to switch over- then screen locks also when it rings- have to unlock screen again. yet, even with lock on- phone is redialing out last number while in my Verizon beltclip pouch, in horizontal position. Is this a fluke, or a defect- or something else? I have 25 days to make up my mind for 30 day trial period. what should I do? i’m going to call tech support before i assume anything.

William Westerso says:

Hi. I’m having a/the similar problem regarding what Scott just said above. I mean, every time I call someone and then talk for however long we want to talk on the phone, it works… then, after a while, it reboots itself. What gives? :-|

Mike Dee says:

My phone was locking up on the email notification screen if I let the notification screen sit for a while. I actually would have to take out the battery to be able to reset the phone. I had the software reloaded as suggested by Verizon and have not seen the problem again, but am only on my second day so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Today it rebooted by itself during a phone call so I am beginning to worry. Maybe I should call Verizon or was it just a fluke that can happen on occasion?

That happens to me all the time. Once I even turned it off and it turned itself back on. I got a new phone and still have problems. Other than that I love this phone.

Jamie says:

I haven’t had the turning off randomly/ calling people randomly problems, but just recently, after using bitmap on limux, I can’t hear anything when anyone calls me, on the outside or the inside (speakerphone). I disagree with everyone who saysy the voyager has an epic fail touch screen because my is in perfect condition. Try recalibrating it to your liking. Anywho, does anyone know how to fix (not return for a new one) this problem? I appreciate the help!

Snype says:

Its the hands free head jack problem. When you plug in the headset into the phone it turns off the speakers so that you can only hear from the head set. But when you pull the headset out of the phone the software does not pick that up so it keeps it in headset mode. What to do.. just call ur voice mail and once it starts talking plug the jack into you’re phone untill you can finally hear it out of ur speakers. (Do that fliped open so you can hear it on speaker phone, its what I did). It took me only once to plug it in and unpluging it to have it fixed. But I’ve read that some people had to do it 20 or more times b 4 it worked. Its a software issue, strange huh. Well I hope this helps you out and many others who read this =)

John says:

I just recently purchased the LG Voyager Titanium, and I cannot find a shortcut key to Security Lock the whole phone. All you had to do on the old Voyager was hold down the pound key, but that toggles it between normal and vibrate mode on the Titanium. So is there one? And if so, what is it?

Thanks

Tom says:

Ok I am on my 3rd Voyager, lastest firmware and all the other excuses they give you about this phone not working. If you think the phone shutting off at random and freezing constantly is gonna go away your mistaking. They give me a new phone everytime and its the same problem over an over. This week it is freezing and shutting down at least 3 to 4 times a day. Mid conversation etc ill take my phone out of my pocket and it will be off. Sometimes it freezes so bad you have to pop the battery off. This phone is garbage and I am going to the store tomorrow and demanding a different model phone or am I done with verizon. I have had them for 11 years now and this phone is terrible. I know 2 people that have voyagers and never had a problem so go figure. I mean what are they gonna do give me a 4th voyager and force me to keep a piece of garbage?

Narmeen says:

Tom – I am on my third Voyager too. Each one is worse than the previous, and I believe that when they replaced mine in July, it was a refubished one. They don’t make them anymore (at least you don’t see it on the website anymore). It’s terrible. And if I try to upgrade prior to the new every two, I lose the “$100″ credit or whatever it is towards a new phone. I would go back to AT&T and get an iPhone, but I cannot get service in my building with AT&T and my family is on Verizon. Ugh!

Snype says:

I read not too long ago that the reason the phone restarts or also frezzes is because when the battery gets a lil warm the auto shutoff takes effect. Its in the manual. If you feel that the battery is getting too warm then just let the phone rest a lil. It shuts off so the battery does not get damanged in which it could leak or blow up lol. So that shut off is nice for us but sucks at the same time. I think they came out with a software upgrade so the phone will let the battery get a lil warmer then it should and give you longer play time but don’t quoute me on that. I only think not know this, only because I skimmed on that issue. My charger port is the issue =P

My voyager doesn’t play music from sd card, it doesn’t change ring tones, it shows picture form sd card but it wont play my music, whats up with that?

Snype says:

I had the same problem too. I found the fix. Since you have data on that card I would back up all of it first onto a computer because the fix will erase everything off ur miniSD Card. After you backed it up, put the card into ur phone. Then go to Menue>Setting & Tools>Memory>Card Memory> Then click the button that says Options. When you click it, it will bring up a task menue to format. You want to hit ok to format the card. By formating it erases the data on the card but makes it readable to you’re phone. Once you have done that, you can now add mp3′s and be able to hear them via Vcast Player or on the phone its called My Music. I know this was posted a long time ago but I just wanted to write this to any one new showing up to this site and maybe help them as well. =)

megan says:

i want a voyager can you tell me about them

Chase says:

Ok I have the Verizon Wireless family plan and I want the LG voyager, will it cost more for the internet and stuff because the phone i currently have i do not pay for any of that? Please e-mail me the answer someone.
Thanks
Chase,

Dawn says:

Yes you will have to upgrade to a premium plan.

Holly says:

I have the LG and I absolutely loved it at first…but then it randomly started turning on and off, and it also kept freezing (mind you, i researched this throughly before getting the phone, and brought up the freezing problem to the verizon guy who told me it only freezes because there isnt enough space and he told me if i bought a memory card i would be fine) Well I have had my phone for 4 months and have gotten it replaced twice…The second time being just today…and now i am going back tomorrow for ANOTHER replacement as the calibration wont stay calibrated…infact it wont calibrate at all. I hit the “next” button while texting, it thinks im hitting “A” Its so annoying. No matter how many times I calibrate it, this doesnt change.

Tricia says:

I have had mine reboot in the middle of a call twice now – found on another forum that having Mobile IM running in the back could cause this. I’m going to try turning that off to see if it helps but it’s frustrating to have the phone reboot while talking.

read this says:

Keep in mind your cell phone is like a tiny computer, so it needs to power cycled or in other words, just turn of off and back on at least once a day. If you don’t do this your phone will run slowly, act strange or get really low signal strength. Often times a phone will just crash- like what yours is doing I this is not done.
Do pull out your battery, though and find your liquid damage indicator strip. If it is red this means your phone has been exposed to moisture. If white then everything is fine.

Jim says:

My wife and I both have LG Voyagers. What is with the extrememly sensitive microphones while talking on the phone. These Voyagers pick up every single background noise. If there is the slightest bit of background noise…..whoever I’m talking to can here the noise and barely hear me. I have searched and searched my phone…..is there a way to change the microphone sensitivity??? This is extremely annoying!!!

Frustrated says:

I have had the voyager for 6 months it REGULARLY reboots itself and there really isnt a solution if u call verizon they now trade you up to the new “titanium” version..don’t waste your time it does the same thing. My other line has a blackberry storm and it work phenominal definately worth the extra money.

Renee Bailey says:

My Voyager keeps loosing sound….I can’t hear anything when people talk? Txt and camera, etc. still working, just no sound? Any ideas????

daynielle says:

That is the main reason why I had to get it replaced today, for the 17th time. There is nothing that can be done. They just have to replace it.

Julio says:

This doest work with apple’s snow leopard anymore. the brand LG was taken OFF

That really bothers me… not with LG, but with Apple. There have been lots of reports of major compatibility issues with the new Snow Leopard.

For example, apparently Photoshop CS3 won’t even work. I doubt people would want to pay a couple hundred bucks just go get the newest version…

I think they want you to buy an iPhone :)

daynielle says:

The Voyager is probably Verizon’s WORST phone, Ever. I had it for about 2 years, and during that time (Verizon told me this today) I have replaced it once a month for the full two years. Today, 6 months before my scheduled upgrade, I finally lost it and demanded a new phone. I literally could not take it anymore, This was the third time this week they had replaced it. PLUS, they never have it in stock because they discontinued it for being a peice of crap and therefore I had to go without a phone for two days at a time, each time they replaced it. The charging port always broke. The battery never held charge. It randomly shuts off. The touch screen is crap. WORST. PHONE. EVER.

Snype says:

They stopped selling Voyagers cause they got introuble with using that name. They replaced the Voyager with LG enV3 but they made some chages to them. Next time ask them to give you the LG enV3 as a replacement since thats what they did to replace the Voyager. Yeah my charging port is messed up and my battery does not hold at all. It would start to die on me after talking for only 5 minutes and I just took it off charge and it said battery was full so yeah. But I can’t complaine. I got this phone for $100 off craigs list and it looked used. Maybe if I buy a new battery it will hold longer but who knows. I think I should save up to buy a new phone.

Bruce says:

I have no sound when my phone is closed . I can only use it when it is flipped open . When it is close , people can here me , i just cant hear them . I am at a total loss ?

Snype says:

could be the headphone jack problem. I posted it on top of what I mean. But its strange that you can hear them on speaker. I couldn’t hear on speaker or anything. Well good luck if my fix don’t work. (Not my fix realy I found the answer on a diff fourm a month or two ago =P)

Brandon Evans says:

I Got my phone from a friend and he didnt have the driver software cd i cant find it anywhere i need it if anybody knows where i can get it

Vanessa says:

Alright so I’ve had this phone for almost a year. I’ve had it replaced 5 times. And each one has a different problems. The first one the USB/Charger port broke so I couldn’t charge my phone. & same thing with the second one. & the third one. Then the fourth one because the screen cracked with was really weird because it wasn’t on the outside of the touch screen, it was the inside of the touch screen. The fifth one because it turns off ar random times when I’m on the phone, & in the middle of very long text messages. But, now I can’t change my phone again because I will have to pay. Right now my current voyager, when I try to touch the message button on the main screen, it touch shortcut menu, and when I try to press it again, it touched the top left button and I get really pissed off when this happens. It turn off randomly and it still sucks, and then when I listen to the speaker it makes this horrible beeping sound with irritates me because when it’s quiet and I’m texting someone that’s all I hear. This phone is garbage I wouldn’t recommend this phone to anyone!!

mercedes says:

i love the phone but my charger port broke can i plug it in any were else?

Wendy says:

Here’s a question I hope someone can answer: In Nov. 2009, my working terrifically Voyager (orig. model)was replaced by me cause I got the Droid as a birthday gift. I spoke with Verizon techs and folks in the store about getting my purchased ringtones off my Voyager and onto the Droid. Reality: they appear on the MyVerizon site but are greyed out – not available – for the promised download. After much aggravation, someone in a Verizon store finally said that the tones can’t work on the Droid, it needs another format & that’s why I can’t download them. Well, can anyone help me “crack” the twice purchased protected ringtones? (I bought them for a previous Verizon phone & had to buy them again for the Voyager)I paid 2x for them & just want to put them on my PC so I can change their format & use them on the Droid? Hackers can do anything, so why is this so hard? And why is Verizon not training their people? Or is it just that they want the sale more than the customer?

Jacob says:

I’ve noticed the turning off randomly too. I go to school from 8 til 3 and i never use my phone during. i’ll notice after school that it’s on and when i go to text it shuts off in the middle of my text. my battery definitely isn’t overheating, considering i hadn’t used my phone all day. i’ll also notice where i’m waiting for a text, then i look at my phone 10-15 min. later and its off. It makes me angry… plus my bottom row of keys on the internal side all don’t light up. makes it hard to text in the dark.

Porkupyne says:

@ Wendy
I put my own ringtones on my Voyager via a nifty little program called BitPim. You can download it for free and it does not put you at any risk of causing any damage to your phone. In fact, if nothing else I would recomend that you use it to back-up all of your information (contacts, calendar, etc.) With BitPim, you can also gain access to your ringtones and should be able to copy them to your computer and then subsequently to your droid. As far as compatibility is concerned, I think Verizon is feeding you a line of BS. I moved mine straight from my Voyager to my newly purchased (upgrade) Motorola Droid without changing anything and they worked fine.

Sorry that was my friend- she’s so mean! Yes, I am about to order the voyegar, and like many other people, was tempted to by the iPhone (so cool!) but then this came out! So luckily if I persuade my mom (who’s not stupid or embarrasing) and I should be getting it! Finger crossed! My bday is on the 21st June which is soon so I’m really hoping!

Just wanna say… I love you guys in California (my home town oh yeah!) and yes, I do like new York… But this is about the voyeger so I’m gonna say thumbs up and buy it! Thanks, and I hope you buy the phone (and that I get it for my bday (please!!) !!).

Thanks for reading and email
me about the phone if you can!!

Thanks!! Mahnoor xx :))D

Does anyone know where I can get the device driver for the LG Voyager 10000 Titanium for a Win 2K computer? I want to use BitPim to create ringtones and can no longer locate my software that came with the phone.
