LG VX9900 (enV) – Verizon 529
The long wait is finally over. The LG VX9900 (aka LG enV), an upgrade to the popular VX9800, has finally arrived. Skatter Tech readers are in luck since Verizon Wireless was kind enough to send us a unit a few days before the launch. With a ton of new features, a new body, new interface, and a reasonable price tag, the phone has definitely met our expectations.
The phone looked quite big at first since we recently spent time reviewing the Motorola KRZR and LG VX8600, but according to the specs is actually much sleeker and shorter than the original “The V” phone. In terms of basic features, the LG enV (pronounced “envy”) features an impressive 2MP camera w/ flash, microSD expansion, stereo speakers, bluetooth, a full QWERTY keyboard, and standard V Cast Music/Video functions. This phone might just be Verizon’s “best phone of the year”.
LG VX9900 Specifications:
- Provider: Verizon Wireless (1.9GHz CMDA)
- Form Factor: Laptop-like w/ QWERTY keyboard
- Dimensions: 4.64H x 2.08W x 0.78D (inches)
- Weight / Battery: 4.6oz / 4hrs 30mins talktime
- Screens: External 128×160 & Internal 240×320
- Digital Camera: 2 megapixel camera and camcorder
- Storage: ~50MB internal + microSD (2GB max)
- Others: Bluetooth 1.2 + Stereo Speakerphone
- Price: $150 with a new 2-year contract
LG enV Body: 4/5 stars
Although the VX9900 is larger and very block-like compared to most flip phones, it’s still more compact than the VX9800. The phone can not be placed upright since all sides are rounded or even placed down on its back properly since the camera bulges out. The inside of the phone is designed quite well and everything is where it should be. The keyboard keys are backlit and spreadout. Overall the phone is a bit bulky for average users and isn’t the best looking phone, but size and looks can be thrown out considering the features it has packed inside.
Displays: 4.5/5 stars
The outside display (65K 128×160 px) is a way too small, but luckily the enlarged interface allows access to most required functions. The internal display (262K 240×320 px) is pretty bright and the colors are just stunning. It’s one of the best displays we’ve seen in a while.
Music Playback: 5/5 stars
The VX9900 support playback of unprotected MP3 and WMA files plus purchased V Cast Music. Music can be browsed by Artists, Albums, Genre, or Songs, similar to iPods. A neat addition is “Music Only Mode” which disables incoming/outgoing calls limiting the phone to just a Mp3 player to save battery life. Although the music player takes a few seconds to load, with the right setup music can be started in just 2 clicks.
Speakers: 4.5/5 stars
The enV has dual speakers for stereo surround, which makes music sound a whole lot better. Even when the volume is loud, the sound is still clear. The phone also utilizes the same speakers for calls, making it probably the best speaker phone we’ve used. The only downside is that, since the speakers are on the inside, they only sound good when the phone is open.
Digital Camera: 5/5 stars
The enV features a 2 megapixel camera which can snap shots up to 1600×1200 px. The images are bright, clear, and crisp, which is pretty good for a camera phone. (click to enlarge sample) The camcorder can record up to 1 hour clips at 320×240 px, but only 15 second clips can be mailed. Photos can be taken with the phone closed and held sideways like a traditional camera, but can also be taken using the larger internal display when open. Since the cam is on the back, the outside display turns on for self-portraits when flipped open. Other than that the phone also has a mechanical lens cover, flash, night shot, self-timer, and some extra effects.
Interface: 5/5 stars
We have to congratulate VZW for finally giving the interface a huge make over. The ugly red bars and menus are gone! The new “communicator” style has a new layour, soothing blue colors, and some animated items. However the important internal menus are still organized the same way as regular VZW phones. Some items in the main menu seem misplaced, but it isn’t a big issue. VZW has also included another style which is very similar to the classic theme, but with new icons/colors.
MicroSD: 4/5 stars
Music can be transfered to the phone using the “Sync” feature, however we were unable to do so since Verizon hasn’t released the USB cables or drivers yet. (check back for that) We instead directly copied the music onto the microSD card using an extra card reader/writer. Card access is easy, it is right under a flap on the right-side. Update: We got our Music Essentials Kit, but there are still some bugs. When syncing with Windows Media Player 11, the software keeps detecting the phone as a new device each time it’s plugged in. (auto-sync won’t work) We were also unable to get the Album Art to display on the phone, which worked perfectly with the KRZR. Card Reader/Writer Users: Format the card in your phone first. Folders for music, flix, and pics will be created. Finally just place the proper files into the correct folders.
Bluetooth: 5/5 stars
The Bluetooth (v1.2) on the enV now supports many new profiles, which include: headset (mono), hands free (ex. car), data modem, stereo speakers, image printing, contact cards, file transfer, and wireless keyboard. Supports saving up to 20 different device “pairings”.
Overall we would recommend this phone for people who take a lot of photos, heavy email users, music listeners, and “computer geeks”. If you usually only use your phone for making calls I’d suggest finding a smaller phone, which you will definitely appreciate more. If you do plan to get it, it will be available in stores and online starting Monday, November 27, 2006. If you are a current Verizon customer and are eligible for the every two year upgrade, the phone can be yours for as low as $50 + tax. However it will cost new customers signing up for a 2 year contract $150. New customers can get the phone for FREE after a Mail in Rebate online. (link below) For the features this phone has its an extremely good deal.

@ Sgt. Mayhem
Yes, you will need a SD card reader for you PC and you also need an SD adaptor for the micro SD card. Then, you can view the files on your micro SD card. This will cost less than the music essential kit. I also bought the music essential kit before for my chocolate phone and it sucks. Holla back if you need any help…
The only disappointments I have with this phone:
a) IM’s are through txt and not data like Blackberry/Sidekicks/T-mobile Dash
b) MP3 player and Web 2.0 close everytime you go to another task like TXT or IM. SOME multitasking would be great.
It doesn’t look like any Verizon phones are getting multi-tasking anytime soon. One of the few phones I have seen that support multi-tasking is the Samsung Upstage.
There are verizon phones out there that let you multi task, which are PDA/cell phone. I had one of those before
I just got the new EnV and its nice so far. One thing I’m severely disatisfied with was my 9800 allowed me to personalize the ringtones for incoming text messages from specific people (a different ringtone for different people’s text messages.) I find the 9900 doesn’t allow this. If anyone knows a remedy to this I would like to hear it. Personalizing my text message ringtones was one of my favorite features. Any feedback?
My girlfriend has a LG enV™, which for some reason has suddenly quit storing her new address book entries in alpha order. Any idea why, or at least how to put them in alpha order? –Thanks for any useful feedback!
I just got the env yesterday. I bought a 2gb sandisk microsd card but it wont work. I format it in the phone and then insert it into my computer but windows will not read the card. I get a message saying that the card is not formatted and asks if i want to format it. Any idea on what i’m doing wrong?
where can i get 1 for a realy good price?
Ivebeen considering getting a new phone and i dont know which one to get.My choices are the sidekick 3 or the lg env, i have know idea which one to get.HELP !!!!!!!!
I saw a few posts concerning mp3’s not playing on enV phones. I had the same problem and found out that some of the ID tags for the songs have special characters in them like /&(%. I used Musicmatch to strip all the tags except for the song title and everything is working fine now. Also, to convert wma to mp3 check out imtoo.com they have software to convert pretty much anything.
Okay, so i am debating between the LGVX8600 and The enV. opinions?
I done so many things to my EnV already…please don’t buy movies or music from Verizon. It’s just a ripped off…you can convert all the music and movies files yourself. There is a software called Super, which basically converts movies into a format, where EnV can recogized.
Dan-
Are you also using a scandisk adaptor for your micro sd card to be read in your PC?
I really think this phone is amazing and I think that if you have a chance to buy it get it.
I love this phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I’ve loved my enV, but now I’m sad. This thing took a tumble down cement steps and was fine, but it fell out of my pocket onto a hardwood floor and the inside screen cracked. Everything else works fine, but what a pain. Should have gotten insurance…and a phone cover.
I just got my Orange Envy today. Sweet Phone. Also for all the users that have the Silver Envy if you press the 0 button in the menu and enter the code as 0000 you will have access to a hidden menu. Also to format a memory card the lock code is the last 4 digits of your phone number
Omggggggg.
im getting the env this weekend and i am sooo happy!
this is going to be the greatest phone ever!!
and plus now i can acually type on my phone, which is what i’ve always wanted to doo.
[Also for all the users that have the Silver Envy if you press the 0 button in the menu and enter the code as 0000 you will have access to a hidden menu]
Can you elaborate on this? There’s the 7 zero menu but I don’t know about a 4 zero menu.
FOR JODI:
i know about the 4 zero thing, but what is the 7 zero menu?????
helpppp!!!!
Just call up Verizon and they will walk you through resetting the phone
I don’t want to reset the phone. I’m just curious whether the 4 zero “secret” menu is the same as the the 7 zero menu.
o okay. If anyone need helps on putting music or video on the ENV for free, just let me know..

hey guys im getting the env tomorrow and on my old phone.. the red samsung phone.. i bought the music essentials kit for it and it never synced the mp3 to the wma, it was a reall pain in the a$s. Is it easier to put downloaded music from your pc onto your phone? Would i need to have VCast to transfer the pc music to my phone?
hey jodi,
I e-mailed you but your not replying!
What’s going on??
talk to mee.
:)
I have a sinus headache and other health issues. Will reply when I can.
ohh, okay!
just comment whenever.
I am thinking of getting the enV this weekend. I wanted to know if anyone who has it now ever had the Motorola e815. If you did, how is the reception comparision between the two? I admit, I love the look and features of the phone, but I also want to be able to use it for its purpose which is to make and receive calls. LOl!!
I “hated” my e815. Dropped calls almost daily. LOVE the enV! 2 months and no dropped calls.
Thats odd. I loved my e815. I didn’t have dropped calls unless I was deep underground (subway). Are you in a “good coverage” area of verizon?
My boyfriend and his daughter got e815’s too. His calls drop almost daily and we’re in the L.A. burbs! None of us dropped calls with our previous phones. She got a NE2 Samsung and is happy. His NE2 is due soon and he wants an enV. I also dropped calls with my mom, who has a different phone but is in the same city
Has anyone figured out how to sync the enV to a mac yet? I would love to find out.
the phone is great, accept for if you a full song from v-cast music, then literally like evry ten minutes it will go off! and i HATE it. but other then that its great! the camera is flippon awesome…and the keyboard is the best! p.s the razrs suck ballz!
love && peace…dani
yoo guys go to myxertones.com they send you ringtones for free and your almost garunteed to find the ringtone you want, i have the env and they come to my loud ans great! The only problem is trying to customize your own, i send it to myslef and i never get them, if you want ones already made and that arent “clean” then go to this website, almost all the songs your looking for have the chorus and more!
Rob i tried myxer tones and i found the ringtone and i got it and everything but when i opened it, and tried to save the sound it said “no media attached”
would this have anything to do w/ the fact that i have a verizon phone
not the enV a different one
The next enV better have a bigger screen and more style. Overall, I’m satisfy with it especially playing hour of music.
I’m getting my new enV Orange this week does anyone kno if any other colors besides this and silver are comin out in the next month or so? Please anyone that knos tell me as soon as possible.
One other thing does anyone one kno if a new enV is comin out anytime soon so i kno if i should get this one now or wait for the newer one to come out it would be very much appreciated if anyone can let me kno.
Also I have one more question can you use your own sounds as ringtones because that is something i would want in a phone it would be appreciated if anyone can let me kno as soon as possible. Thank You
I guess i have another question about this phone lol. What is this sexret “option” type thing everyone is talking about when you press 0 then go 0000 what is this supposed to do because i dont want to try it and have it mess up my phone. If anyone knows what this hidden “option” does please tell me. Thank You!
Does anyone know how to get the annoying little “Loss of Service” lady to quit saying that every time you drop out of your service area. I’ve been through every possible means (Verizon and LG) to try to figure this out and no one can tell me how. Thanks much!
Im gettin an EnV soon. Shuld i get the original color or the orange?? Any suggestions?
AMAZING PHONE! Better then iPhone. I’m addicted to V CAST videos and the Music ID–The FREE Music ID is worth the cost alone. Plus I can stayed logged into MSN, Yahoo and stay in touched with all my business affiliates from, and broadcast txt messages to ENTIRE GROUPS.
Man… all you guys talking about the EnV makes me want to buy one! I’m not into music, but I download a lot of videos from various websites to my LG VX9800. 2 things that I’m disappointed with is: 1) Video-recording capability is up to 15 seconds both text and storage, and 2) sometimes when I receive a call from someone, it is pretty loud or it sounds like a “crackle”. Of course, changing the volume is one basic thing, but.. when on calls, I guess it can’t be changed. Any ideas? Btw, I’ve gotta wait for my contract to expire next year before I buy the EnV. I’ve got a friend of mine who got his orange-colored EnV. It sounds cool!
Ben that used to happen to me but a couple of weeks later everything was working, make sure you can accept picture messages and that your phone is listed under verizon, try to see if you can send a picture to your phone, if that works then i dont see why the media wont attach, and no you can have any service or phone to use the website.
is the env or the samsung phone that flips two ways better…. a bunch of peeps have told me the env breaks alot wat about yall. is the env really long. well help plz… thks
This phone kicks ass. Everything you need in a phone is in this one. I’ve never had a better phone and probably won’t.
well im planning to get the Env 9900 during this month and i was wondering what are the main problems you guys are having with the phone and about how many songs can i put into the phone(using internal memory)
I had my calender lose all the information I had entered on it. How do I prevent this from happening again. And I also have not been able to transfer my videos from my sd card to my computer. I dont have a problem with my pictures just my videos.
Ah, the beauty and tech of the new LG enV Burnt Orange (more like copper)! Have had the phone for 72 hours and am finding more and more to love about it! The only thing I’d like, is to communicate with other Mac OS users and share notes on the uses and ins-n-outs of this fine bit of tech with the Mac OS system (ie – text, emails, wallpaper, music). BTW- Alot nicer in a different color than the first enV edition!
