LG VX9900 (enV) – Verizon 531

LG VX9900 - Front

The long wait is finally over. The LG VX9900 (aka LG enV), an upgrade to the popular VX9800, has finally arrived. Skatter Tech readers are in luck since Verizon Wireless was kind enough to send us a unit a few days before the launch. With a ton of new features, a new body, new interface, and a reasonable price tag, the phone has definitely met our expectations.

The phone looked quite big at first since we recently spent time reviewing the Motorola KRZR and LG VX8600, but according to the specs is actually much sleeker and shorter than the original “The V” phone. In terms of basic features, the LG enV (pronounced “envy”) features an impressive 2MP camera w/ flash, microSD expansion, stereo speakers, bluetooth, a full QWERTY keyboard, and standard V Cast Music/Video functions. This phone might just be Verizon’s “best phone of the year”.

LG VX9900 Specifications:

  • Provider: Verizon Wireless (1.9GHz CMDA)
  • Form Factor: Laptop-like w/ QWERTY keyboard
  • Dimensions: 4.64H x 2.08W x 0.78D (inches)
  • Weight / Battery: 4.6oz / 4hrs 30mins talktime
  • Screens: External 128×160 & Internal 240×320
  • Digital Camera: 2 megapixel camera and camcorder
  • Storage: ~50MB internal + microSD (2GB max)
  • Others: Bluetooth 1.2 + Stereo Speakerphone
  • Price: $150 with a new 2-year contract

LG enV Body: 4/5 stars
Although the VX9900 is larger and very block-like compared to most flip phones, it’s still more compact than the VX9800. The phone can not be placed upright since all sides are rounded or even placed down on its back properly since the camera bulges out. The inside of the phone is designed quite well and everything is where it should be. The keyboard keys are backlit and spreadout. Overall the phone is a bit bulky for average users and isn’t the best looking phone, but size and looks can be thrown out considering the features it has packed inside.

LG VX9900 - Opened

Displays: 4.5/5 stars
The outside display (65K 128×160 px) is a way too small, but luckily the enlarged interface allows access to most required functions. The internal display (262K 240×320 px) is pretty bright and the colors are just stunning. It’s one of the best displays we’ve seen in a while.

Music Playback: 5/5 stars
The VX9900 support playback of unprotected MP3 and WMA files plus purchased V Cast Music. Music can be browsed by Artists, Albums, Genre, or Songs, similar to iPods. A neat addition is “Music Only Mode” which disables incoming/outgoing calls limiting the phone to just a Mp3 player to save battery life. Although the music player takes a few seconds to load, with the right setup music can be started in just 2 clicks.

Speakers: 4.5/5 stars
The enV has dual speakers for stereo surround, which makes music sound a whole lot better. Even when the volume is loud, the sound is still clear. The phone also utilizes the same speakers for calls, making it probably the best speaker phone we’ve used. The only downside is that, since the speakers are on the inside, they only sound good when the phone is open.

Digital Camera: 5/5 stars
LG VX9900 - Camera ShotThe enV features a 2 megapixel camera which can snap shots up to 1600×1200 px. The images are bright, clear, and crisp, which is pretty good for a camera phone. (click to enlarge sample) The camcorder can record up to 1 hour clips at 320×240 px, but only 15 second clips can be mailed. Photos can be taken with the phone closed and held sideways like a traditional camera, but can also be taken using the larger internal display when open. Since the cam is on the back, the outside display turns on for self-portraits when flipped open. Other than that the phone also has a mechanical lens cover, flash, night shot, self-timer, and some extra effects.

LG VX9900 - Back

Interface: 5/5 stars
We have to congratulate VZW for finally giving the interface a huge make over. The ugly red bars and menus are gone! The new “communicator” style has a new layour, soothing blue colors, and some animated items. However the important internal menus are still organized the same way as regular VZW phones. Some items in the main menu seem misplaced, but it isn’t a big issue. VZW has also included another style which is very similar to the classic theme, but with new icons/colors.

MicroSD: 4/5 stars
Music can be transfered to the phone using the “Sync” feature, however we were unable to do so since Verizon hasn’t released the USB cables or drivers yet. (check back for that) We instead directly copied the music onto the microSD card using an extra card reader/writer. Card access is easy, it is right under a flap on the right-side. Update: We got our Music Essentials Kit, but there are still some bugs. When syncing with Windows Media Player 11, the software keeps detecting the phone as a new device each time it’s plugged in. (auto-sync won’t work) We were also unable to get the Album Art to display on the phone, which worked perfectly with the KRZR. Card Reader/Writer Users: Format the card in your phone first. Folders for music, flix, and pics will be created. Finally just place the proper files into the correct folders.

LG VX9900 - Sides

Bluetooth: 5/5 stars
The Bluetooth (v1.2) on the enV now supports many new profiles, which include: headset (mono), hands free (ex. car), data modem, stereo speakers, image printing, contact cards, file transfer, and wireless keyboard. Supports saving up to 20 different device “pairings”.

Overall we would recommend this phone for people who take a lot of photos, heavy email users, music listeners, and “computer geeks”. If you usually only use your phone for making calls I’d suggest finding a smaller phone, which you will definitely appreciate more. If you do plan to get it, it will be available in stores and online starting Monday, November 27, 2006. If you are a current Verizon customer and are eligible for the every two year upgrade, the phone can be yours for as low as $50 + tax. However it will cost new customers signing up for a 2 year contract $150. New customers can get the phone for FREE after a Mail in Rebate online. (link below) For the features this phone has its an extremely good deal.

Can anyone please tell me how to upload videos from the enV to the computer? I have the cables and everything, i just dont know what software to use. Its my friends phone, and he said the cables just came with the phone… sans any program to upload stuff.
Any ideas?

William says:

Hi. Yes. You should be able to download a software program called Bitpim. It would let you transfer files between each other, either by cable or by bluetooth donagle (?) adapter. When I mean by bluetooth (BT), I mean it as having a BT-enabled phone and an available accessory to transfer files between each other. If BT is not an option, then you could buy a cable either from eBay or at your local store.

Hope this helps (To Mike).

get bitpim… you can then use it via usb cable for the 9900 and send as many MP3;s that you want with the music essentions package and maybe with out it.. just sync it and BTW Bitpim does operat with lg vx9900 enV easily.. very user friendly… i am trying to get games now with no luck…

DNA says:

My enV freezes, too, with the blue screen. First time I had to remove the battery for several minutes, and it rebooted. Second time it took several hours before it worked. Any suggestions?

Jack says:

Well, I finally got my Orange EnV after thinking about it for 4 months. I got it on November 1st. I’m enjoying it alot. It took some time getting use to the QWERTY because it was the first phone I had used and owned myself that had one. but after that, it was a breeze. The only thing I’m not fond of is that if its in your pocket without keyguard, it will make random calls because the front buttons are so touch sensitive. and its froze once when I was reciving a txt and shut off but turned back on (And that was the 2nd day I ever owned it too). I’m impressed, because i can txt alot faster, but i wish it was more like a PDA for the price I payed for it. but I am happy. :) and all my friends are jealous. heh.

Mackenzie says:

Hello!
I am going to purchase the enV this holiday season. I was just wondering if it was possible to download my iPod songs & videos onto my new enV. And if it is, how it would be done. Thanks !!

Liv says:

RB: Having problems with the phone shutting off for no aparant reason…

I am having that same problem, and it has been going on for two months now. I have called to report this issue every occasion to make sure it is on file that I have reported the problem. I recently spoke to a customer service rep. who is sending me a new phone and should get here today. I am afraid that the next one will do the same thing, i think it is a flaw in the technology. My husband had the same phone and it turned off on him often as well. if i knew then what i know now…lol, i’d choose another phone =(

Jodi says:

Liv,

I’ve had the 9900 since May and it has never, EVER shut down on me. As a matter of fact, it’s the best phone I’ve ever owned! Maybe you and your husband just got a bad batch. Hopefully the new phone doesn’t have that flaw…and I’m sure it’s the phone, not the techonology.

Brian C. says:

I preface this by saying that the inevitable answer is probably simple, I’m just an idiot. So I’ve had my orange enV for a few weeks. I figured it was time to get more memory so I bought a Scandisk 2GB microSD 3-in-1 card. I was trying to move music from my computer onto my phone, but it’s saying that it’s write-protected. I’ve done all the things I can think of to undo that with no success. Suggestions?

yes the enV is a good phone .. it changed my ringers on its own but i have been loading it out with apps, so i figure one of them chaned the ringers which by the way are not Verizons choices, but my on… a program called “Bitpim” will work wonders with yer 9900 le enV.love the phone.. i am sorry though that the sales man told me it was the new kid on the block and i bought it 2 months back and its over a year old … oh well next xhange over and i will investagate ffirst

Victoria says:

To whom it may concern, My en V has never ever shut itself off, so I think there is an individual phone problem with the people’s that have. Brian I think you have your card or your adapter locked, I have done this and have to get my son to figure it out it’s simple but I have worked too many hours this week thus I am brain dead so, and the kid’s not home, but it’s simple I remember that much..Maybe someone else out there has all their cells intact and can give you a hand. By the way Myxertones is up and running again for those who want to take the easy way to get new ringtones..good luck everyone..As far as the en V being the old model, well I wouldn’t have gotten mine for practically nothing if it was the new model, so I am still happy with my purchase…Tech. changes as fast as it’s made anymore…

The SD card that you are placing your microSD card into should have a little switch on the side. Make sure the switch is NOT in the lock position. If on, it will not let you add or modify content onto the card.

Victoria says:

Thanks Sahas I knew someone out there would help Brian out with the problem and jog my memory too! Everyone is great to help out..

Ethan27 says:

I have a question for someone willing to answer it,
If I am about to get an enV, will both, my pictures and contacts, be placed from my old phone to my new one?

Sahas Katta says:

@Ethan27
The Verizon Wireless store should be able to transfer all your contacts onto your new phone. It usually takes about 30 minutes or so. I am not 100% sure if they can do the photos as well. If your old phone has a microSD slot, you could copy the files onto that then put it into your new phone!

Ghostwatcherz says:

I am having trouble downloading ringtones. If I can add any mp3 as a ringtone, why do they make it so difficult? I dont want to pay Verizon for a song I already have… Isnt there any easier way to find them online and upload to the phone directly? I cant even get photos to work right…

papa54 says:

use bitpim and simply transfer the song/s as mp3’s.. shoot you can import the entire song and make it a ringer, but the ringer once set will only play about a minute before it cuts off.. its simple.. now i need the info to get into the fields or background programs located in the phones memory..ie:0,0000. i just can not remember how to do it again..

Michael says:

While listening to music on the phone(env9900), with headphones. music continues to play from the phones speakers. Is there a way to turn off the phone’s speakers while listening with headphones.

papa54 says:

use a program named “Bitpim” iots free and will open up the lg9900 env without any problems transfer whatever you want to to the cpu or cpu to phone and yes all mps’ can be made into ringers for the env,,, just remember to sync the files..

Paul Cotter says:

Papa54, I think this is what you are referring to: To enable non-verizon approved mp3 files on the vx9800, open the menu (open phone and push “ok”), then push “0″ enter “000000″ as the service code, and at the bottom of the menu you can open up “music settings” and change it to mp3. I found this on another site but I will not get my vx9900 until Christmas, so I have not tried it yet. Please give it a go and let us know if it works!!!!! Merry Christmas!!!!!!

Robin says:

Has anyone figured out how to turn off the lock button in the front touch screen of the Voyager? That thing makes using the phone so difficult. You have to use it before every function. I’d like the ability to turn it on and off at will

Tia says:

ok, so I bought the env and when the tech person swapped my numbers and stuff she told me that I didn’t need to buy the music essentials kit and that when i got my card not to format it and I would be able to dump my songs on the card via a reader. I did that…the phone only showed/played 5 out of the 41 I put on there… so I erased what the player had and now I have nothing to play. The memory is showing all my songs I put on the card…how do I get them to play now on my phone?

lola says:

you can record music in sounds and send it in a pix message and then save it as a ringtonr

Hallie says:

I just got the orange env it is a great phone i wasn’t sure between the env or the voyager but i am extremely happy with my decision everyone should get the env instead of that crappy voyager ok bye

morgan says:

Hi Hallie i just got the orange env too i love it also i also had a problem deciding between voyager or env i’m happy with my choice too bye

kevin richard says:

i work for verizon wireless and the easiest way to get a sound so that it will be your ringer is to save yourself as a contact then send yourself a picture message. within that message instead of sending a picture send a sound and once you recieve the message simply just save it as your ringtone

albert says:

there is a new green env now, right? if im going to change mine from orange, about how much is it gonna cost me to upgrade? or do i have to buy new one?

Victoria says:

Albert the green enV is just like your Orange so there really is no need to change, if you want a different color go to e-bay and buy a case for it, I have several because I use a clip to carry mine around. The Voyager is the new phone out now. I like my Orange enV just fine, and the reviews are better so I am sticking with the enV for now.

Brad says:

The review is all ok, but it is a phone. How good is the freaking antena!!!
Reception is non existant in this review of a mobile phone. Uhhh derh.

What about Battery Life

I’m using a VX6100 for 4 years – and happy as a puppy. Recently the original battery died and the two replacement batteries I’ve got for $10 each on the web don’t do much better –> phone is dead :-(
Been looking at the enV but I’m a heavy speakerphone user and if I picked up the hints correctly then the enV’s speakerphone mandates keeping the phone open. Is that so? Does not seem like the right solution to use especially while driving…
Any insights anyone?

ok open the 9900 up.. lay it down and go to the get it now icon.. and press the zero button (0).. then enter the zero’s in place of the ? marks… you are wide open and i would not change the pass word an ) is easier to remember.. now get the free “BitPim” program online… connect the cpu to the PH with a usb connection.. flip on bit pim and change about anything you want to.. including any MP3 you like..no matter how long it is… i converted the whole MPs although it wont play it all as a ringer but will play it all when i wanna play that song…easy as pie..

is the screensaver supposed to only be “active” when your phone is charging and plugged in? it just doesnt seem right that the phone’s screen automatically goes “black” and perhaps into power save mode after your backlight goes out. all of my other phones always stood on to at least show the date/time. is anyone else annoyed with this odd function on the lg-env? or is it just me? has anyone figured out a way to actually keep the screensaver on the way its supposed to work? if so, please post a comment….thank you kindly ;-)!

Actually, you CAN set an entire song as a ringtone if you have an SD card with the memory to hold it. Download BitPim. When you’ve got your phone connected (with the USB Data cable for your phone) to the program, you will see an icon on the top of the window that shows a music note with a + on it. Click that, find your song, convert it, click ok. It will convert the song for you and save it in your ringers in the program. Then you need to “Send Data to Phone”. After this is complete, open your phone and view your ring tones, it will be there. If my directions don’t make sense, just download BitPim and view their “How To” section.

I know it works. I have Upgrade U (the entire song) as the ringtone for my sister, You’re the World to Me as the ringtone for my husband (the entire song) and I ripped a section of the Kill Bill Theme for everyone else.

It does work. You need an SD Card, the cable and BitPim.

papa says:

listen up,,everyone,,,,there is a free Program called “Bitpim” it is easily found and DL’ed.. it will place a mp3 in yer phone as a ringer.. the whole song ..but the env only gives about45 seconds and then it goes to voice mail…but the entire song can be heard if you want to.. theres options to move other parts of info as well.. i am not a gamer, so i did not try to load any.. i will tell you this.. in southeast tn they called the envy9900 the new kid on the block… and after i bought 1, i found they had been out since 2006.. so my next will be new if i have to order it from california.

papa says:

and yes the hole for power and usb does get wallered out.. hows that for southern..

dan says:

There have been a lot of questions about ringtones. Goto http://www.bitpim.org/ and download the program; you will need a data cable or computer bluetooth usb device.

1) Open Bitpim; it should automatically connect to your phone.
2) Click View, View Filesystem. Be careful in here because changing/deleting files could mess up your phone!
3) In the directory window expand to the folder brew/16452/lk/mr
4) Right click in the white space under name, and click new file.
5) Select an mp3 file and it will be uploaded (other file types may work too, but I am not sure).
6) Right click and click Reboot Phone; or turn it off and on yourself and your ringtone will show up

Note that you may want to cut the mp3 file down to a 20-30 second clip instead of putting an entire song in the ringtone folder.

As for saving your own sounds as ringtones…Recorded sounds are saved in the brew/16542/ms folder. Select your saved sound, right click and save it to your computer. From there you can follow the previous steps to set it as a ringtone

There’s also a green one out now.

William says:

Wow. I’ve not been here for a long time! Anyway, what Jodi posted is true. However, what are your opinions on the differences betwen the EnV (any or all colors) and the LG VX10000 (a.k.a. The Voyager)? Is there a message inbox limit on either phone? On the LG VX9800 (or “The V”), the message inbox limit is 50, and I hate that. On newer phones, I heard it can have up to like 100 or 200 messages in an inbox (or sent). [I could be wrong, though]. What about Internet (mobile web) on either side? What are the essential features and all that?

there is no charge to upload music from your computer but the songs from VCast on your phone are 1.99 off your phone and $.99 off the internet

I know there is a green EnV out already. I went to circuit city today and the employee heard from the LG rep that a new color is coming out, but didn’t mention the color. I’m hoping it’s a black or blue one!!!

joe says:

does the enV front keys lock or does it call people by accident if it’s in your pocket?

Jodi says:

You can turn the Keyguard on by pressing the ‘#’ key for about 2 seconds.

Hi:
Great forum here! Have been reading a lot of the posts and have gotten A LOT of information about the ENV. Still debating whether or not I should buy it. I probably will….lol…anyway, was wondering when converting songs so that they can be transferred to the ENV to use as a ringer, is it possible to “cut” the song so only a specific part of the song plays as the ringer or will the ENV play the first 30-40 secs of the song as the ringer? I probably will “test-drive” the phone during the first 30 day period to see if it best-suited for my needs. Thanks!

PKA,

>is it possible to “cut” the song so only a specific part of the song plays as the ringer

I did it with Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ and Queen’s ‘Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy’. I don’t remember which program I used but maybe someone here can suggest a program? It took a lot of trial and error to get exactly what I wanted but it is possible.

PKA says:

Thanks, Jodi! I’ll look around for a program to “cut” the song. :-)

Jodi says:

Okay, I racked my brain (well, I actually looked on my desktop) and realized that I used the Nero Wave Editor program.

Ring Master says:

The easiest way to get a ring tone on the LG EnV 9900. Find your song. Download Audacity. Cut song to around 30 seconds. Export as wav. Then I used I tunes open in I tunes convert to MP3 make sur the file size does not go above 399Kb(lower the bit rate as needed) I use 96. Then add to you memory card under My Sounds. Then send a pic message to yourself adding the sound under sound. Open message, options, save as ringtone. Boom your in there. I know it sounds like a lot but it is not. I did 10 in like 5 min. Good Luck

Yes, I’m having the same issue after just 8 months. First had to finesse or hold it in to get it to charge- now it just broke on me. This started only after a few months! Seems like the connection was never solid from the beginning. I really like the phone but I can’t afford to keep replacing every 9 months?!?!

Maniac says:

enV is nice device…anyone successfully sync using bitpim on mac via bluetooth?

nxzemagrl says:

Bitpim, Mac, and bluetooth.

Unfortunately, not as of yet. However, if anyone has, I now know 2 people that would greatly appreciate the help! Thanks!

LOADING MUSIC ON ENV WITHOUT BITPIM (the computer illiterate version). If you have an SD Card reader in your computer and are using media player 10, I found that transfering music to the card automatically places it in the My Sounds folder which doesn’t play on the phone (and you can’t click and drag the files in media player). What you have to do after you transfer the music to your memory card, go to My Computer on your computer desktop, open the SD Card drive where you’ll see all the folders and the music you just transfered. THEN, you can click and drag all the files to your My Music folder from here and they should play just fine after that.

Ok. I WAS wondering if its possible to be able to hang anything off of the EN V phone. i have it. and what i mean by hanging off i mean like an accesorie type thing. Some other phones have a small are on the tips of them to hang off little things. And i was wondering if the En v is capable of doing that?

Mike G. says:

The next EnV aka VX9100 is coming out in Europe end of 1st Quarter – Beginning of 2nd Quarter. The Voyager is not the replacer of EnV, which some people may have thought. Please check the link below and also search on youtube “LG VX9100″ Chat with me about EnV or new cell at AIM eatfishy

My camera doesn’t work all the time. I was wondering if anyone has a solution for me. I will hit the camera button and the please wait screen comes on and eventually the phone will restart. The camera doesn’t work all the time. I have called Verizon on this and no one seems to have an answer. Maybe I need a software upgrade or something. Please email me with any information on this. Thanks!
