Stream iTunes Library To PSP - April 17, 2006
Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a very popular device and has sold a few million units, but when compared to Apple’s iPod, the PSP lacks storage space. Luckily, the PSP has a built in WiFi card to make up for this disadvantage. With a few simple steps, all of which are included in this tutorial, anyone can stream any non-copyright music from their iTunes library to their PSP. To get started, you will need to have the following:
- PSP With Firmware v2.60
- Networked XP Home/Pro Comp.
- WiFi (802.11b) Network Router
- Apple iTunes v6.0.4 Installed
- Songs in iTunes Music Library
- At Least 1 Playlist With Music
The 5-Step Setup Procedure:
1) Download iTunes-PSP-Server.exe and save it to your desktop.
2) Disable any firewalls and/or keep port 8080 open.
3) Launch iTunes and then click on the iTunes-PSP-Server after.
4) In IE/Firefox open the page “http://localhost:8080″
5) Setup is complete if an “iTunes RSS Server” page appeared.
If the iTunes RSS Server page didn’t appear make sure your firewall has authorized “iTunes-PSP-Server.exe” to access the internet completely. You may also want to add a rule into your firewall to keep port 8080 open. The “black box” is the server, DO NOT close it.
Before going any further make sure you know the IP address of the machine running iTunes and the iTunes-PSP-Server. To find you Local Area Network (LAN) IP go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Click on your Network Card -> Support Tab. Your local IP address should look something like this “192.168.1.xxx”. Another method is to go to Start -> Run… -> type “cmd” hit enter -> type “ipconfig” in the window. Your IP Address should be displayed there. Once the 5-Step Procedure is complete and you have found your Local IP Address, proceed to the next step.
The PSP Setup Procedure:
1) Turn on your PSP and go to Network -> Internet Browser.
2) Enter “http://IPADDRESS:8080″ into the Address area.
3) When iTunes RSS Server appears add it to your bookmarks.
4) Now click on any orange RSS icon and “Add This Channel”.
5) Close Internet Browser and go to Network -> RSS Channel.
6) Select a playlist you added and YOUR’RE DONE!!!
This tutorial only demonstrated how to access your iTunes Library over a Local Area WiFi network. If you wish to access your iTunes Library music from any “HotSpot” or external location, you will need to forward port 8080 in your router to allow your Local IP to be accessible externally.
Other Notes: To close the iTunes-PSP-Server just select the black window and press CTRL+Shift+C and it should close. If you update your iTunes library once the server has already been started, selected “Reload Library” on the webpage in your PSP browser. The server can only stream non-copyright protected (DRM-Free) MP3 and AAC files. (no video support yet)

Hummm… surely this is taken care of by your iTunes? I don’t know the inside of this software but from what I can tell it needs to know where the .xml file is and then it gets the music. I would guess if you iTunes can handle the multiple disks then this can too?
mac-rulez says
MyTunesRSS is really good. I don’t know about C and E drives, but the software takes the iTunes Music Library XML file in which iTunes stores all music file references. So no matter where the files are, if they work in iTunes, they’ll work in MyTunes. Really guys, check this software out.
mac-rulez says
By the way, MyTunesRSS 1.1 was released only two days ago with new features like iTunes playlist support! All people who tried 1.0.1 should really try the new relase!!!

This has worked very well all the way up to the psp conection part…after i type in the address on the psp it says “communication with the server failed. A DNS error has occured…” Any ideas?
Basta says
Hi shrub. What address are you trying to access with the psp?
Omega_Nemesis28 says
It’s easier then an RSS Feeder, let me tell you. But, Im having a problem. I have all my firewalls enabled port8080 and the program too but whenever I try to either play a song… it freezes on my computer and I loose connection to the server on my PSP. Also, I have this one playlist - PSPMusic - and when I go to download the channel… it freezes too. I’ve tried lessening the amount of music and a new playlist but it always freezes when obtaining that one playlist.

Very nice and promising tool!
However, I got this little problem: the soft seems to ignore accents in the name of MP3 files, and this is like a BIIIG problem for me, as there is at least one “é” or “à” in most of my song/album names…
This drawback of living ion France, I guess! ;-)
Is there any way to correct this, except by renaming all my MP3 collection ?
Thanks!
Codewave Software says
Hi Chris,
please mail me at info@codewave.de and attach a log please. To get the log, just enable it on the first tab and then start the server. After it is running, click the button to view the log and copy it into a mail.
>> By the way, I just tested accents and they worked on my local Firefox as well as on my PSP. Please open your iTunes Music Library.xml in a text editor and send me the very first line, the one beginning with “<?xml”.
Thanks,
Michael Descher

is der any other way?? for the computer not to be one you know or give meh steps on how i can forward my ipaddress on my router cause i can only access my music when i’m only at my house use my router….
Chris says
Thanks Michael, I tried MyTunesRSS and I can see all my songs now, including those with an accent in the name! For that reason as well as for the user-friendly UI, I’ll continue to use it instead of iTunes PSP Server.

Hi. As you can read in the official forum (board.codewave.de), the next version will have a new feature to browse your library and generate not only RSS-feeds but M3U-playlists, that let you listen to your music with many common media players that do not support RSS!
BUCKET says
HOW DO YOU MINIMIZE THE SERVER WINDOW? CAN THIS BE PUT IN TASKBAR?
BTCS says
Will you be able to add album art in a newer version, with that this program would be even greater!!
Brendan says
I was going to read every comment but I had no luck, I needa go to bed soon, but I did this, I got the rss working fine but when I scan to get the actual music files they dont come and on the server box it says it doesnt exist (it does) and then it skips that file. I cant get any to work
likeitellu says
i have used this for a while now and i frikin love it, but today, it stoped working. No fancy text came up saying “its ok to use the server now.” NOTHING!!! i even tried downloading it again and that didn’t even work. if someone knows how to fix this problem, please dont hesitate to e-mail me. My e-mail address is team3989@yahoo.com.
MacRulez says
Hey, just use MyTunesRSS from Codewave ( http://www.codewave.de/products/mytunesrss ) and forget all your problems. ;-)
Underground_hip hop says
i did this and it works, but i want to access it through a “external” hotspot location. I opened my port 8080 on my dlink router, and when I tried it from an outside location, the rss channel would just take forever to load and then it would say “the server has timed out” or something like that.
MacRulez says
Did you use the correct IP from outside, i.e. your external IP? The ones MyTunesRSS displays in the status line are for internal access only.
BTCS says
Does codewave have album art support when you stream to the PSP?-
(Hey, just use MyTunesRSS from Codewave ( http://www.codewave.de/products/mytunesrss ) and forget all your problems. ;-) )
Roland says
Hello BTCS. I am the co-developer on MyTunesRSS. MyTunesRSS does not (yet) support album art, but we are keeping that in mind for a future version. At the moment we are working on version 2.0 that will support “library browsing” and “playlist creation”. (Check out the preview screenshots on our board: http://board.codewave.de/viewtopic.php?t=8!)
Also, you are allowed to make feature requests on our forum. Just give us a visit!
One note to the other guys commenting on this article: It got hard to figure out, which product the comments are about. So if you are having trouble with MyTunesRSS, please come to our forum (http://board.codewave.de). We will try to help you.
Greetings, Roland.
PSP Dude2 says
