Stream iTunes Library To PSP 173
Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a very popular device and has sold a few million units, but when compared to Apple’s iPod, the PSP lacks storage space. Luckily, the PSP has a built in WiFi card to make up for this disadvantage. With a few simple steps, all of which are included in this tutorial, anyone can stream any non-copyright music from their iTunes library to their PSP. To get started, you will need to have the following:
- PSP With Firmware v2.60
- Networked XP Home/Pro Comp.
- WiFi (802.11b) Network Router
- Apple iTunes v6.0.4 Installed
- Songs in iTunes Music Library
- At Least 1 Playlist With Music
The 5-Step Setup Procedure:
1) Download iTunes-PSP-Server.exe and save it to your desktop.
2) Disable any firewalls and/or keep port 8080 open.
3) Launch iTunes and then click on the iTunes-PSP-Server after.
4) In IE/Firefox open the page “http://localhost:8080″
5) Setup is complete if an “iTunes RSS Server” page appeared.
If the iTunes RSS Server page didn’t appear make sure your firewall has authorized “iTunes-PSP-Server.exe” to access the internet completely. You may also want to add a rule into your firewall to keep port 8080 open. The “black box” is the server, DO NOT close it.
Before going any further make sure you know the IP address of the machine running iTunes and the iTunes-PSP-Server. To find you Local Area Network (LAN) IP go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Click on your Network Card -> Support Tab. Your local IP address should look something like this “192.168.1.xxx”. Another method is to go to Start -> Run… -> type “cmd” hit enter -> type “ipconfig” in the window. Your IP Address should be displayed there. Once the 5-Step Procedure is complete and you have found your Local IP Address, proceed to the next step.
The PSP Setup Procedure:
1) Turn on your PSP and go to Network -> Internet Browser.
2) Enter “http://IPADDRESS:8080″ into the Address area.
3) When iTunes RSS Server appears add it to your bookmarks.
4) Now click on any orange RSS icon and “Add This Channel”.
5) Close Internet Browser and go to Network -> RSS Channel.
6) Select a playlist you added and YOUR’RE DONE!!!
This tutorial only demonstrated how to access your iTunes Library over a Local Area WiFi network. If you wish to access your iTunes Library music from any “HotSpot” or external location, you will need to forward port 8080 in your router to allow your Local IP to be accessible externally.
Other Notes: To close the iTunes-PSP-Server just select the black window and press CTRL+Shift+C and it should close. If you update your iTunes library once the server has already been started, selected “Reload Library” on the webpage in your PSP browser. The server can only stream non-copyright protected (DRM-Free) MP3 and AAC files. (no video support yet)

Is there a way to set this as a computer service so it can run in the background and i dont have to look at the command window all of the time?
thx
Ok i am a more experenced web user but for some reason i still can’t get The PSP to see the site. I can get to it fine from my pc’s. I first installed this on my own pc then i tried it directly from my music server. Eitherway i can’t get it to work. I have port forwarding on and all the ports are open. When i tried it on my server i kept getting wide character in print error. It says the error is in the perl file. If i could get to the perl file i might be able to fix it but since it is a executable and that file is not accesable i need another way to get this server working. Is it somthing wrong on my psp?? or is it the computer because it shows up fine via the computer, and via the web since i have a domain name. I just don’t understand why this is doing this.
Thanks in advanced for any help,
Dhruv Bhavsar
Holy. . . this is awesome! :D Only bad thing is that a lot of my newer, more listened to music is DRM’d.
Is there any Linux support, I’d love to put this on my home server and be able to access the content anywhere. :D
Thanks!
Hi:
This is my second post because I wanted to update those interested on how I solved my original problem where I could not get my songs to stream. Turned out that the reason I could not get the songs to list after adding the playlist as an RSS feed was because I was trying to list a song that had DRM. DRM songs will not stream with this program. This works with mp3’s that are not protected!!!!!! After finding a non-protected mp3, I was able to easily reference a song and have it play on my PSP. Didn’t even have to port forward the port to use it within my home. Great program!!!
I got it working perfectly. when paired with something like (http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_MP3_Player) you get streaming music on the web that is as easy to do as dropping a song into a playlist and starting the iTunes-PSP-Server.
Just to clarify for dumb ppl like me – when he says go to http://IPaddress:8080 he means insert your IP address into the url not just type IPaddress as i did lol it works if u use the URL http://:8080
Wow! This is a great piece of software! One quick question though. I would like to know if you will be adding two byte character support for file names that are not in English. Thanks!
I can’t get http://localhost:8080/ to open on my main computer. I went into Windows Firewall config and allowed Port 8080, but with iTunes and the server running, still nothings happening when I go to http://localhost:8080/ on my PC. What’s up?
I can see the RSS Feed and I have songs in the playlist except when i try to click on the rss feed, it says “The content cannot be displayed.” I am at the last step and I am so close. Please someone help with the very last part.
Here are some answers to the questions I have seen:
> Why isn’t it working on Windows Media Center 2005?
It is a XP-based OS and therefore should work, check your built-in XP Firewall once again. If it still doesn’t work, I don’t know whats wrong.
> My PSP browser says http://IPAddress:8080 is an error…
Make sure you are entering the right IP address of you machine, not your PSP’s IP. If it is working on your machine thats good news, now find your LOCAL IP using one of the methods mentioned above and try entering it into your PSP. If that also doesn’t work, I can’t help you much other than tell you to check your firewall settings.
> Why are my songs skippy and buffer a lot?
This may occur for multiple reasons:
PC may be running slow because of too many processes.
Your WiFi router may be slow or too far from your PSP.
The song’s kbps might be too much. (320kbps tested)
> Do I have to leave the computer on to access music?
yes, because if your computer is off then the iTunes RSS Server is also off meaning your PSP is not really connecting to anything.
> How do I update RSS playlist on my PSP?
If you modify your iTunes playlists once the server has already been started, you will need to go to the iTunes RSS Server page and press “Reload Music Library”. (go back to the RSS channel and it should work)
> I can’t get http://localhost:8080 to work on my PC
If you are running into this issue and you have already opened up the firewall ports, this may be because other services using that port are running on your machine. I suggest closing all programs and services not required and trying it again.
this app rules it is a lot simpler than the last one I tried.
this is the greatest thing to happen to planet earth since astronaut ice cream!
sahas: thanks for all the answers!
question, once a rss channel is added, will it auto update the aggregated links? each playlist can change over time.
update: please ignore last question. the reload works.
This i suspect is very similiar, but doesnt require iTunes to be installed.
Streams WMA’s too. – http://tinyurl.com/fq6yz
nvm i got it to work. it was a corrupted SAMPCH folder (the one from the sample channel) so i deleted it and now it works! i also noticed that before i deleted it, i couldnt download any RSS channels at all. NICE WORK DUDE!!!
My problem is that I had to upgrade to 2.6 but to be able to listen to an unlimited number of music files it so fricken worth it. I love this app.
Excellent Job, what about pls support? I am interested in restreaming shoutcast streams to my PSP. I have spent a number of hours hacking at this problem to no avail. Would that be a difficult addition to this program?
Hey- I can’t wait to get this working. I get everything setup until i get to the PSP setup. I type in my IP Address and all that in the URL box thing, and once it loads it says “The connection to the server timed out.” What should I do?
How do you open up port 8080
Wow, Great software, The first time I tried it every thing worked as promised! However, the next day, (after running Windows Washer) My black box is just that. A black Box, with none of that text that was there yesterday, telling me it was running. I’ve re-downloaded the I Tunes PSP Server but nothing I’m doing seems to help. Any suggstions?
This is frikin awesome!! Unbelievable!!!
Nice try and everything, but this seems to be yet another let-down. I have run into quite a bit of these so called “time saving apps” which claim to stream music to the psp easily. Unfortunately, it gets the feed open and then when it is accessed, it searches for the file and then gives up for some reason, claiming that it doesn’t exist and skips everything. No, it isnt a DRMed file, or the port is wrong, or the ip address is wrong. There is something wrong in the coding. I can tell this because of where it stops (after it is polled for the tracks). So once again, nice try but its somewhat useless. I might as well go back to coding one myself that will include video support for the new psp update (If one will ever exist. However I think that may be yet another letdown…) unless if you can find another way… -Disgruntled User
I was able to get the Itunes RSS server page to open on my computer but when I tryed it on my PSP it says “Communication with the server failed/ DNS errot has occured. (80410414)” I have no idea what that means. I have the 8080 port open and my firewall turned off. I am trying this at my home. Plz help
Se Garrit i have the same problem. Heck i can even access it via computer from outside my house. But my psp can’t load it at all. I get the same error on the psp and in the black box i get a wide character error. I don’t even think the guy who created this is been to this area in a while.
If you cant get it to work READ EVERY POST!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most likly some1 else has your problem and some1 has replyed to it. I just wana say ty to rickyh2k for telling me how to fix it. READ EVERYthing it may be long but this is well worth IT!!

is there something i can do if i am getting a server timeout every time i try this? i haven’t been able to get it to work yet, because every time i put in the address on my psp web browser i get a server timeout. thanks.
Brilliant. Ive been trying to get this to work ever since RSS came out for PSP – now finally it works and was dead straight forward. THANKYOU! ever so much :-)
Cool program, one question, how do you get this thingy to work with an airport?
thank you Garret – to clarify my earlier post for other people use the url http://(IPaddress):8080 you must insert your own pc’s (running iTunes) IP address where it says IPaddress and all should work – also remember to open the PSP program BEFORE iTunes
“The Connection was refused when attempting to use ‘IP’:8080″ HOW THE HECK DO I GET THIS THINK TO WOK!?!?!?!?! i have the latest psp version and itunes version my email is gadgetguy22@yahoo.com
Awsome, love it, now i can save my 2gig for other things. Good work to all who made this one happen.
will this work on Win 2000 pro? my server still run that os…
> I am getting Server Timeouts, Please Help!
If you are getting server timeouts or error messages on the PSP and it works just fine on your PC please do a few tests. First if you have another machine on the same LAN, just type the same IP address into that machine and see if the “iTunes RSS Server” page comes up. If it still doesn’t work from anywhere other than the PC running this your port :8080 might still not be open. Check your winXP firewall as well as any other 3rd party firewalls. If it did work at some point and then stopped, try restarting your machine and trying again, sometimes windows messes up port settings.
> Error 80410414 or other PSP errors?
If the only area you are running into the issue is your PSP try some of the following. Restore Default PSP settings in your PSP and try again. Just for a quick check make sure your PSP can access the web by opening the browser and trying to access any webpage. You also MUST be on the same LAN network, unless you are trying to stream it to places outside your home. If everything works but can’t access the iTunes RSS Server page on the PSP, the problem is most likley with some firewall setting on you PC.
> Wide Character Error.
The current iTunes RSS Server currently has problems with certain characters in song file names. It may not work properly with some symbols or other language characters. Sometimes even if the iTunes RSS Server accepts them, the PSP might not be able to recognize them. Therefore i reccomend, for those having this error, to make sure that your iTunes Library doesn’t have songs with unusual characters.
> Firewall Questions:
if you are having issues with timeouts and not being able to access it on your PSP, try it out once with all firewalls off. (turn of WinXP firewall as well) make sure your PC allows other LAN machines to access your files. Also a quick restart would be helpful.
kk this thing works from my computer as a localhost but when i put in my ip address in my psp with the port it just goes to my routers homepage? can anyone fix this problem?
what is a safe port to change it to? and do i have to have the management thing enabled in order to use the RSS feature.
justin i have you covered on tis issue. Go to advanced on your router or look around for it. You should see somthing called remote management. Click it and change the port as the default remote management port is 8080. I also had to change mine. And if you are not using it then disable it for safety precautions.
Justin a safe port is not really existant. But if you don’t need the option then disable it. THis will NOT effect the psp. But just so u know i used port 8181 since it is just 2 changed digits and easy to remember for me. Also remember if you leave this option on then make sure to change ur router’s default password. Also if your router allows then also change the user name to strengthen security. Just some advice..
Take care justin!!
I get far but when it comes time to use the psp, I get a problem. After entering http://IPAddress:8080 into the Address area in the psp internet browser I get the message “Communication with the server failed..A DNS error has occurred. (80410414)” anyone know what to do?
I have been having alot of trouble with this. I followed the instructions as said to, except I wasn’t sure on how to open port 8080, and the http://localhost:8080 doesn’t open to the RSS Feed page. Any help on how to open port 8080 and help in general would be highly appreciated. Thanks

sorry- try PspMediaServer – easier way to do it…
I’ve finally got it to work and the thing i can only say is…uhum… IT KICK ASS!!….VERY VERY COOL! xD
I Did everything the tutorial said but I still couldn’t get it to work…. now I’m pissed off!!! :(
sry CJ, I’d never
a) set up IIS just in order to stream some music
b) fiddle around /w config files just in order to stream some music
c) create redundant copys of my files just in order to ….
d) .Net just in order to… you must be kidding
instead I prefer
- d/l that 2.5MB sized (free) file, no need to install anything
- I Tunes as the most polished media-player (up to now) is installed anyway
- just start the server, confirm WinXP Security Waring (Yes! Allow) connect to my machine and beginn listening to music in 5m
pls don’t create a Gui or other nonsens not needed in any way.
great App! THX!
hey this is great and i fixed my (dns) error and my search engines work when i type them in in the browser but the (dns) comes back whenever i type in http://IPAddress:8080 … any help?
