PSP Blue Screen Of Death 136

PSP Blue Screen

Many of you may have come across an article about six months ago (on sites such as [tag]digg[/tag]), which showed a crashed PSP with a blue screen. The image that was showed back then was actually a result of what would occur if your PSP were to crash when running a homebrew application. But the image seen above is actually a real Blue Screen that is a part of Sony’s PSP. From my experience I had never seen this screen before, but only appeared on my PSP with Firmware v2.60 when a game froze. The error message popped up when I accidentally hit the eject button on the Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories UMD while the game was loading. (This might also occur if you put a PSP to sleep when a webpage is loading.) The actual error message says:

Setting Information is corrupted. Press the O button to repair and restore default settings. (displayed in 10 languages)

When this occurs none of the buttons function (even power switch) other than the O button. Once it is pressed it starts to restart and it goes through the startup splash screen. After that it displays the setup process that everyone goes through the FIRST time the PSP is turned. Also to note, the PSP that got a Blue Screen has never had any homebrew applications on it and has never been downgraded. There was no mention of this crash screen anywhere in the manual or online, if this has happened to you let everyone know by commenting below.

dang, i didn’t know the psp could actually crash

Saturn says:

I’ve had one of the first PSP. I’ve upgraded the firmware everytime, taken games out when I wasn’t supposed to and had no problem.

Ignat says:

Happened to me during Prince of Persia. Never had any homebrew and just upgraded to 2.60

tmp says:

I lent my PSP to a friend so that he could play GTA on it, and he came back with that blue screen! My save was destroyed! And he didn’t do anything special, he was just playing and Bam! Something happened! PSP is crap, Rockstar are lousy programmers!

Jeff says:

I have gotten this a number of times but it is mainly when I am using one of those “cell boost” battery packs to play my PSP for extended periods. It seems as though the cell boost doesn’t give enough juice to actually charge the PSP and the unit will loose enough power from the battery to loose it’s settings. I’ve never lost any data or anything like that… it’s just been when I turn off the unit and the battery is completely drained. If I try and power on the PSP without the cell boost on or the charging cord in place, the unit will not even turn on the green power light. But that’s my experience.

Jay says:

My cousin has come back from Canada today, he got a psp from overthere.
I want to play GTA with him, i dont think he has it.
I hope that i don’t get this blue screen of death when i perform the 1 game sharing umd trick..

yetieater says:

I’ve seen this message once upon downgrading from firmware v2.00 to v1.50. v2.00 has new settings that are not supported in v1.50 – new context menus and whatnot that have variables that v1.50 simply does not like. This happened on first boot into v1.50 and after clearing back to factory default settings, I haven’t experienced it again.

I did, however, experience some difficulty in attempting to upgrade firmware back to v2.00. Had to clear to default settings again in order to successfully get through the update.

And yes i’m playing GTA:LCS

Im tired to type my WEP key everytime after reset.. (and other settings) bah.

pavaloo says:

hey if you started off with a 1.5 psp and updated to 2.6 would this bring you to your original settings and downgrade?

sahas says:

[Comment ID #1811 Will Be Quoted Here]
I wish it would downgrade your PSP back to 1.50 everytime this occured so I could go back to using homebrew, but it unfortunatley doesn’t work that way. The PSP firmware is writing to the bios, which replaces any old files already on the PSP. If you get to 2.60 your stuck there.

P.S. I agree, retyping the WEP key each time is extremely annoying!

A.J. says:

Pavaloo:
A guaranteed way to get this blue screen to happen is to take out the PSP in very cold weather (95 degrees Fahrenheit).

J.V. says:

I have the same problem as beeva and HellRazor. The blue screen just keeps coming up after hitting the O button! Anyone know how to get my psp working??

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem? Is it a good idea to send to Sony? i bought the PSP 4/5 months ago and i have downgraded. Will that affect in something if i send it back to Sony for repair? PLz answer me ;)

thx

sahas says:

For all of you with Blue Screen which are not going away even after restarting. This is because you tried to downgrade or run some sort of homebrew application. If you try to restart it and it doesn’t work at all it is probably bricked. Sony will probably not offer support because you were not suppose to downgrade in the first place. However i’d still try using my warrantee and just say it happened while playing game. Also try removing your memory stick and then restart it after it has been off for a while. If you are able to load the PSP normally try upgrading your firmware to a newer edition so that it overides any errors in your current one.

ace9094 says:

ok if you get BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH

Follow the guide below…

step1
Call sony:- 08705 99 88 77
you must NOT tell them you use homebrew..

tell them you bought locoroco it asked you to update. you connected to the ac adapter then run update when you came back it was on a blue screen with funny writing..

Sony will ask when didi you buy it? you say It was a gift and you dont know…

if they ask any other questions about the update just say you left it to update came back and that is the screen it was on, now it dont work.. if they ask any other questions play dumb and say i dont know…

it worked for me 4 times so far using differnt addresses of friends..

sony will then send a courier in 2days to change it

That happend to me a couple times. It sucks cuse it deletes all ur settings and u have to put date, time, wep password if you have one all that stuff.

cody says:

everytime i try to play a game off my memory card it freezes after laoding to a higher firmware and the “ble screen of death appears and it really @#$@$%%@##$ me off

baphomet says:

I get the Blue Screen of Death as well, but I haven’t used homebrew or downgraded around the time of the initial release. It happened out of nowhere, my PSP is just being a f*g and I have no way to fix it. Maybe I’ll call Sony and use that method to get them to fix it. I took my memory stick out and left the PSP off for an entire week and it still hasn’t done sh*t. Now its annoying because every kid has a PSP and makes fun of me because mine doesn’t work anymore. How the hell did their’s stay in such good shape? They drop theirs, leave it in cold, lend it out, downgrade, re-upgrade, play homebrews and all theirs work perfectly.

Though when my PSP did work; it’d occasionally refuse to load things like the music folder or the USB connection. The little load sphere in the corner came up and went away instantly, I’d restart about 5 times before it’d work. Months later this blue screen crap happened and now I’m screwed.

Angry person says:

I tried to opgrade my PSP from version 2,82 i think to 3,01 and after the installation my psp restarted as it always does after installation and when the start screen where it is written “SonyComputerEntertainment” it freeze and turns itself off.

Do you neeed warranty in order to do that ?

I live I AUS and i just got my psp from hong kong. It’ sucks x_X, the day I leave the airport I decided to try the Internet option via the home menu of the new homebrew games ( cos 1.5, the firmware i have, doesn’t have the Internet option)& i accidentally turned my psp off while the browser fing was on. Then Blue screen >

Winston says:

helloz. I fixed my psp ^^!!!! I just formated my memory card & re-installed devhook by following tutorials.
Check out this link: http://tinyurl.com/yqg4na

I’ts meant to recover ur psp from a corrupted flash1.( the thing that’s causing the blue screen I fink’). It was only released yesterday(19/1/07) & i’m guessing it’s the first of it’s kind cos i’ve never come across this type of program b4. Best of Luck!!

Jameo says:

I was playin on GTA Vice City Stories, I then compleated a mission and all of a suddun the Blue Screen came up i pushed 0 then a red screen came up that said nothin so I tryed to restart it but it wouldn’t switch back on even if you push the on button!!!!

raiser says:

Try going to Settings in XMB, choose:
System Settings | Restore Default Settings

Reboot, reconfigure your date/time etc.
It fixed my Blue screen every time I ran web browser after installing a Dark Alex release (3.10 OE-A).

ricerocketmatt says:

Sony says $89 for a refurb….because they can track your psp by the serial number down to the exact time, date, and store you purchased it at. You cant BS SECA.

Dom says:

Well, I guess I’m part of the club now, cause my PSP did the same thing. Mine’s all original, I mean to say that I never changed anything, nor did I run homebrew. I was playing Vice City when it blue screened out of nowhere. To make things worse, this is already a replacement PSP. The first one crashed on X-mas day, twenty minutes after I opened it up and started using it. That time it just remained black screen with a power light on, no functions at all…it was bricked before Santa made it home :(

Now the replacement has crashed. At first the Blue screen would loop back whenever I pressed O, but now it turns black screen when I press it…with no functions. It won’t power off either, I have to unplug it and take the battery out to get back to the blue screen. I thought maybee it was repairing itself so I left the black screen on for a while, to no avail. Looks like my second PSP bricked itself, and I say it like that because I did nothing to cause it, this is all SONY’s mistake. The product is junk because the software is POORLY written and/or the hardware is incapable of handling basic functions..like playing a freaking game.

I’m really at my ropes end with the PSP, two bricks in three months and I always kept everything factory and never used homebrews.

What’s really sad is that I own every single Gameboy model that ever came out in the US, from the first one to the last, and not one of them has crashed…EVER!

josh says:

i was on the internet and put it to sleep and i turned it back on and i got the blue screen of death luckly my psp still works

James says:

I got the blue screen of death just a few days ago after upgrading the firmware to 3.11. It wouldn’t let me push O like some of the other people on here with the same problem. So i just went to turn it off but it wouldn’t let me, so i pulled out the battery pack turned it on and it let me push O. So i had to go through all the annoying setup crap. But i didn’t know how it all started. luckily it wasn’t the red screen once you get that your PSP is f*****.

Dre says:

I Just bought GTA there on my PSP . It has no homebrew it has no exploits. I played GTA and then Bam !! Blue screen. Now i have no PSP . Im very angry

dr psp says:

i got the blue sceen but i dont know how my umd drive had been empty last few days and i quit the game i was playing and the quit took out umd turn off two days later turn on blue screen and now my wpa thing doesnt work and “key information cannot be sent” shows

StarFX100 says:

This is normal when a PSP form 2.71 get downgraded to 1.5 via a “PSP(tm) Update ver X.YZ” Exploit Program. What it does is erase all the PSP flash memory drives and overrides them with a 1.5 firmware renamed “Update.pbp5″. A PSP-1001 PSP might confuse the new firmware as a system error. But once you press O, your PSP will restart with firmware 1.5.

StarFX100 says:

If you have 2.60 then……

Bad news:
You(TM) Can’t(TM) Downgrade(TM) it(TM)……

Good News(R):
You can downgrade it by upgrading…
2.60 >>> 2.71 >>> 1.5

Buy the family Guy Video Game (PSP), it has the 2.71 Upgrade.

Use a downgrader that is compatible with 1.0 firmware AND the HEND tiff exploit to downgrade.

Zackery graham says:

I figured out how to make it go to the blue screen of death! Since most of you were playing GTA that game must have a virus or something like that, but it is not the PSP console, because when I was playing , DBZ Shin budokai another road, then I started playing GTA, and it turned to that blue screen, I thin they shouldn’t change the PSP, but GTA instead :-)

riotcodes says:

That happened to me, I just pressed O and it restarted sucesfully! Restore defualt settings, when it says “Press the x button to restart” take out the battery pack. Then put it back in and turn it back on, when it is at a black screen take it out again. Then after you put it in again, it will show this screen.

DAT (dark alex in training) says:

this has happned to me about 20 times this is known as a semi brick. good news is that it is reversable if you have a custom firmware, and pressing the circle button doesnt work. you just need to boot the psp in recovery mode and either undo the last thing you did on the flash 1, 2, or 3. or you can run the program at /PSP/GAME/RECOVERY/eboot.pbp. and there you have unbricked the psp. if you dont have cfw and the circle button doesnt work then call sony and get a new psp like XeCuTeR NG5 did.

DAT (dark alex in training) says:

in refrence to Amit’s comment “Since most of you were playing GTA that game must have a virus or something like that, but it is not the PSP console, because when I was playing , DBZ Shin budokai another road, then I started playing GTA, and it turned to that blue screen, I thin they shouldn’t change the PSP, but GTA instead :-)” most of the people were probably playing an unpatched version of GTA. this unpatched version, if used correctly can downgrade the phat psp to 1.50, and can downgrade the slim to 3.60. most of the people probably activated this feature without knowing it and the shut off their psp. this has happned to me several times, and i still havent figured out how this action got started. when i figure out how to start this action i will let you people know. until thenbe careful with what you do with the firmware, cause if you brick this correctly it is PERMINATLY UNBRICKABLE, EVEN WITH THE PANDORAS BATTERY.

my psp is version 6.20 and no mods or anything and it got the blue screen today

barrel says:

Same thing happened to my PSP today (3000 model) which has always used OFW and it has never been modded. The thing was though I was playing a completely different game, Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days and it happened right after I went into sleep mode…The PSP seems fine but this has happened twice ever since I updated to 6.20. so now I’m hesitant to even touch it until a new update arrives (which sucks because I have lots of UMDs I want to play)

Karu says:

Wtf, i thought i was the only one with the smae problem, my psp is also a 3000 model and it happens as well while playing Disgaea 2 with the 6.20 firmware >_>; and it has happened twice.
