PSP Multiplayer With One Game 144

I was playing around with the PSP and I wanted to play a multiplayer game with my friend. But because he did not have the game I was trying to figure out a way to play with only one copy. And I found out that it is actually pretty easy. I tested the game with Twisted Metal and it worked great. To play any multiplayer game on a Sony PSP with only one copy of a game, do the following:

  • Place the game into the 1st PSP. Start the game. Start a Multiplayer Ad-Hoc game. (Set the time to unlimited because moving the game between the units takes a while.) Get everything ready, settings ect., except do not enter the game.
  • Now remove the game from the unit. A message will appear asking whether you want to exit the game, say NO! The game should go back to the setting screen, where it is waiting for you to press start. (Don’t press start yet on PSP #1)
  • Now take the game and place it into the 2nd PSP. Start the game. Now go to Ad-Hoc games and find the server that the other PSP has already started. Once you find the game enter it after choose your personal settings.
  • Once the game is done loading on PSP #2 take it out and put it back into unit #1. And press start and it should load into the game!
  • And now you are playing each other on two PSPs with only one copy of the game. And if you want to, you can do this with up to as many units as you wish. As long as the game supports that many players.

This works great, but I bet you Sony doesn’t like it. Also to be on the safe side I removed my memorystick to prevent any possible data loss if the unit freezes. Also when you want to exit the game it might freeze. And even trying to power off the unit might not work. To solve this problem just place the game into the frozen PSP and it will do some loading and then resume normally. Any more questions? Then make a comment and I will help you if I can.Update: There have been many comments saying that this does not work, but I tested it with Twisted Metal, Need for Speed, Tony Hawk, and a few others and they worked fine. I have made changes to the instructions above. If these still do not work as of (06/20/05) please post a comment below. Thank You!

Update: I tested them multiple times, but I actually found that it is working perfectly on the PSPs with FirmWare v1.50. But when I tried it with PSPs with FirmWare v1.52 it couldn’t connect both of the PSPs together. I have not tried v1.51 so please make a comment u have tried it with it. (07/08/05)

Update: (07/27/05) First I would like to say that the my Multiplayer PSP hack does in fact work with v1.52! There needs to be a few changes made to the procedure and it will work just fine! I am going to be posting the new set of instructions soon so check the main page of my blog. Also Sony announced some new FirmWare Updates for the PSP v2.0, which will work with Sonic Stage 3.2! – link

NEW – I’ve just created a new video that goes over this procedure. It is only a few minutes long and also has directions in the video. I have also re-written the instructions above for PSPs with new firmware so check out by clicking here: PSP Multiplayer Hack Video

Escoge NO.

This is wierd. The PSP has been out in Japan for a while – you think they’d have been all over that and it would be fixed…..

I’ve actually heard that this is an intended feature of the PSP; you are indeed supposed to be able to play multi-player games with one copy. If you could do this with a single-player game, then I can see Sony getting pretty upset with the idea. But its competitor, the DS and the GBA, is already able to play a few games with a single cartridge.

How can you say this works with “any psp game”? Another game by access the UMD throughout the game as opposed to only just before the game starts.

Anonymous says:

Seems like it would work with any game that doesn’t have to re-load once the server is in the level (TM, THUG2 are the only two I can really think of). Other games, like Untold Legends or Lumines access the game when both players move on to other areas — certainly this would cause a problem, right? If only I knew somebody else with a PSP, I’d try it…

Anonymous says:

I take it you skipped the feature called Gamesharing…you know the one that’s built into the PSP.

Anonymous says:

The gamesharing feature only works for certain games, and right now, most games don’t seem to support it, and if they do, it’s not explained how.

Anonymous says:

Yah, I tried the Game Sharing thing with Twisted Metal AND Thug2 and it wasn’t giving me any love. So I looked it up in the manual, and they said look in the game’s manual, and there was nothing in there about it. Any idea what games actually USE this feature?

Monster says:

What the world needs now is less sarcastic people and more informed people.

I wonder if the guy who mentioned Gamesharing even has a PSP…

Ookami Snow says:

If this does work with any PSP game (although i have my doubts). It would be an incitative for me to buy a PSP and try the games before i actully went out and bought one…

Anonymous says:

I tried this with lumines, it doesn’t work, it times out before the other psp had a chance to get into the game.

Anonymous says:

Well guys sorry to burst your bubble, but game sharing, is of course part of the system’s built-in features but the problem is that none of the game developers have implemented it, therefore if on the back of your UMD case (ie. 1-16 players, wi-fi compatible(ad hoc/infrastructure), etc) it says Game-Sharing compatible then yea u can use it. According to the game companies, games like these wont be around till the future(Q4 2005)now december does seem a little far but u can use Sahas katta’s way of game sharing, may be a little risky, but it’s better to do it this way, and save space on your memory stick(yes it does waste MB on your stick), and it only transfers multiplayer feature not offline mode.

I tried this with Twisted Metal but I get a wireless communication error. What gives?

Anonymous says:

This post has been removed by a blog administrator.

Anonymous says:

My twisted metal is also giving me a connection error when trying to connnect this way…

Anyone know why?????

thanks

Anonymous says:

Tested this with ridge racer and it works – you need to swap the UMD back and forth after each race, but it does work.

Anonymous says:

well i tried it with twisted metal and we were both able to get in the game but i couldn’t see him and he couldn’t see me. and then at other times it said there was a communication error with the psp’s. Is there any solution for this??????????????????????

Anonymous says:

Well if you noticed, the box does say only one game is needed for multiplayer.

Anonymous says:

Me and my roomate actually got Twisted Metal to work… somewhat. We couldn’t see eachother at all, even if we went to the same place. Have anyone actually got it to work?

Anonymous says:

I tried this with Twisted Metal as well and go the same wireless communication error. Anyone out there who can confirm that Twisted Metal work with only one umd? Also which game does it definitely work with? Ridge Racer maybe?

Anonymous says:

i have confirmed that Ridge Racer DOES work after a few swaps back and forth, however Twisted Metal DOES NOT work….players cannot see each other on the levels. Peace

Anonymous says:

it dont work i hate you

gelstudios says:

“Archer Maclean’s Mercury” works, you have to (a)host, swap + (b)join, select the level, then wait for it to say “synchronizing machines”, then swap back to the host (a). you can play the level as long as you want, but you have to swap again if you load the next level.

Anonymous says:

Twisted Metal does work. THUG does work also.

You just have to do it right.

Twisted Metal:
Have the host start a server and make all settings. Swap the disk to the other machine, load into the server, make all setting changes. Leave at this screen (Where you select your car, etc.) Swap the disk to the host machine and load in the map/level. Once loaded, swap the disk to the other player, have him load into the map/level.

THUG:
It’s about the same, but I haven’t tried it enough to tell you the exact details.

We have played many times like this. Just make sure not to touch anything after the first load with the UMD in your machine. When you get the UMD the second time only load into the level, and make NO changes other wise you will get errors and not be able to see each other, etc.

TWISTED METAL WITH 1 GAME on 2 PSP’s

ok im not sure if sahas’s way works, but either it doesnt or the way he explained it didnt work. i looked everywhere and modified what other people said and i finally got it to work. not complicated this is it…. ill try to be as descriptive as possible.

1. Person A loads up game, selects ad hoc, makes a game, selects car and all settings to server, loads game and is just sitting there.

2.take game out, a message will come up asking if you wish to leave game, say “NO”. give game to person B.

3. person B puts in game, goes to ad hoc, looks for A’s game, selects it, and joins server.
*pay attention to this part… not too difficult but confusing*

4. after selecting vehicle, go to join game, and when its loading, wait for it to get to the top of the loading bar, wait about 8 seconds, (at this point it should STILL be at the top of the loading screen), pop out game and give to person A (host) and they pop game in.

in a few seconds the second person will be in game. AT THIS POINT the HOST (A) should have the game in his PSP. NOT sure… but with this process im guessing you can do with up to 6 people, but we only have 2 psp’s here so we only tried 2.

*i have not tried this with THUG… but i SWEAR this works with twisted metal. BOTH PEOPLE CAN SEE EACH OTHER AND BOTH CAN PLAY WITH EACH OTHER.

ive been frustrated seeing this above way (not my way, above that) all over the internet… MY WAY (not really my way but just the way that works) WORKS… 1 game can be used to play with 2 psp’s together.

BTW: i have version 1.5 psp… so not sure if its different with other versions.

Anonymous says:

i tried this and it did not work 4 me. it said connection lost for twisted metal & need 4 speed….

WipeoutPure

You CAN play wipeout pure multiplayer with one disk on two psp’s by disabling all the music tracks in wipeout options (for both players). This way the screen on the player without the disk will not freeze.

Shame, as the the soundtrack is so phat

Will CODED ARMS work by doing this procedure? Just asking Thanks in advance.

sony’s games has been cracked! Because I know how to play thug2 remix multiplayer with 1 game on 2 psp’s.(also with 2.00 firmware!!!)

step 1: start up a multiplayergame. So host a new game and enter it.

step 2: switch the umd to the other psp and start up the multiplayer mode.(sony ask if you want to end the game: say no!)
Now you’ll see the hosted game by player one. Don’t enter it!!

step 3: Switch the game again, to player one(the host).(sony ask if you want to end the game: say no!)

step 4: On the second psp(the joiner): join the player number ones game, so press join.

NOW HURRY:

step 5: On the psp of player number one appears a message that player two is joining the game. If the message disappears please immediately switch the player number ones umd disc to psp number two. (sony ask if you want to end the game: say no!)

step 6: Now the game will also be loaded on the second psp.

step 7: ENJOY!!

I’ll hope I helped some people with this problem.

CU! Sebastian..
